Michigan Association of Calligraphers

Michigan Association of Calligraphers Michigan Association of Calligraphers (MAC) is a non-profit organization that is open to all who are interested in calligraphy, the art of beautiful writing.

MAC was formed in 1978. Its principal purposes and functions are to perpetuate, enhance, and prom Our membership includes beginning through advanced students, professional calligraphers and interested artists. MAC has approximately 100 members, most of who live in southeastern lower Michigan, although we also have members in six states and two foreign countries. MAC sponsors General Meetings with

programs, workshops, exhibitions, and lectures throughout the year. MAC holds General Meetings four times per year in March, May, September, and December. Workshops are offered for beginner through advanced calligraphers, with topics ranging from alphabets, alphabet variations, creative use of lettering and related interests, such as bookbinding. In addition, MAC sponsors annual exhibitions, which may be either juried and non-juried, to expose the general public to all that calligraphy is and to provide our members with an opportunity to exhibit our work. The Board of Directors serves voluntarily and through their dedication and efforts, they promote calligraphy and bring our members all the benefits associated with membership.

Please join us for our September challenge! To participate, write out the word "Sunflower" in any style you choose and post in the comments below.

- Write a poem or phrase related to sunflowers or the month of September.

The purpose of this challenge is to get your creative juices flowing, encourage you to practice calligraphy, and engage with our community. Anyone is welcome to participate, and please feel free to add positive or encouraging comments to other participants' posts.

August Calligraphy Challenge

This month marks the kickoff of MAC’s monthly calligraphy challenge. In honor of World Calligraphy Day on August 12, 2026, this month's challenge is two-fold:

1. Lettering Challenge: Write any calligraphy-related word in your preferred style (e.g., Calligraphy, Penmanship, Flourishing, or Lettering, etc.).
2. Research Challenge: Research a famous penman and share any interesting details you discover.

A big thanks to Perfecting Church for hosting this beautiful event which featured Michigan Association of Calligraphers guild.
