Meet Trista! She just wrapped up her senior year of college at the University of Montana, majoring in elementary education. She is a 2026 recipient of the John C. Brekke Scholarshipβ€”her THIRD time being awarded this scholarship. Trista is participating in the Montana Teacher Residency Program, which is a year-long student teaching opportunity for higher-education students in Montana seeking their teaching license. If everything goes according to plan, she will spend next school year as a student teacher in a classroom at Big Timber Grade School, being mentored and guided by the same teachers who taught her when she was in elementary school. She envisions returning to Big Timber after college graduation to start a career as an educator. β€œI want to be able to give back to this community and teach students like my teachers taught me,” she says.

After receiving the Brekke scholarship three times, Trista feels like she’s gotten to know John a bit more. If she could sit down with him, she says she would, β€œTell him about my future and how I want to come back here [Big Timber], and tell him how much receiving his scholarship means to me. Because honestly, maybe without it, I might not have been continuing my college.”

Meet Nathan! A 2025 graduate of SGCHS, he is the sixth generation of his family to be born and raised in Sweet Grass County. This fall, he’ll be embarking on his sophomore year at University of Montana where he is studying visual arts and business management. Nathan is the 2026 recipient of the Jessica Zemsky Scholarship, which is administered by Sweet Grass Community Foundation on behalf of Crazy Mountain Museum, Big Timber, Montana.

Drawn to art his entire life, painting has always been near and dear to Nathan’s heart. Portraits are one of his favorite subjects. He envisions a possible future career in marketing or graphic design, and having his own art studio is at the top of his wish list.

If he could sit down with Zemsky today, Nathan says he’d first thank her for helping him with education expenses via her scholarship. β€œAnd then, secondly, I just want her to know how influential she’s been, not just as a person, but as an artist in our community.”

Included are a few samples of Nathan’s work for you to enjoy. 🎨 Jessica would be so pleased!
