Acacia is an international Greek social fraternity founded on May 12, 1904. Founded by a group of 14 Freemasons at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, Acacia has roots in historic Masonic tradition. Acacia was the only international fraternity to use a Greek word rather than a series of Greek letters as its name. The Acacia sprig is the 13th simple symbol of the Masonic brotherhood, pointing
to the rich history behind Acacia's traditions, symbolism and practices. As Greek does not contain the letter "c", the proper spelling of the fraternity's name is Ακακια. The California chapter of Acacia was the 5th chapter founded in 1904. Today, the California chapter has a membership of 39 active brothers and is one of the few fraternities at the University of California, Berkeley to still remain in its historic chapter house at 2340 Piedmont Avenue. We pride ourselves on upholding our fundamental principles of scholarship, leadership, brotherhood and human service as well as offering a venue for young men to create lasting friendships and memories that will not only help define their college career, but will impact the rest of their lives.
