Breaking: UN High commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, raised concerns about China’s Ethnic Unity Law, calling for the law to be repealed in his statement at the ongoing Human Rights Council session on 15 June.

This is a massive victory for Tibet and ally campaigners but the work is far from done - we need to continue building pressure on governments to challenge China on this law.

The new Unity Law seeks to homogenise the cultures and languages of East Turkestan, Inner Mongolia, and Tibet (regions illegally occupied by the CCP) towards a sinicised version of each, ultimately erasing them.

China’s new “Ethnic Unity” law paves the way for cultural erasure through institutionalised indoctrination. By disrupting the intergenerational transmission of Tibetan language, history, tradition, and culture, the law seeks to sever future generations from their identity and heritage.

The logic behind China’s new “unity” law is barbaric, but simple: a culture cannot survive if it cannot be passed on.

What is at stake if this law remains in place? For Tibetans, everything.

Are you an experienced campaigner with a strong commitment to human rights, advocacy, and the Tibetan freedom movement?

International Tibet Network is seeking a Freelance Campaigner to support the development and global implementation of strategic campaigns on issues including freedom of religion, Tibetan language rights, climate justice, challenging China’s political influence, and cross-movement solidarity.

MORE DETAILS:
- Remote or hybrid
- Fixed-term contract: July 2026 – February 2027
- Flexible hours (minimum 3 days per week)
- Work with a global coalition of over 140 Tibet organisations

We’re looking for someone with significant campaigning experience, strong communication skills, and a track record of developing effective advocacy resources and movement-building initiatives.

37 years ago, brave students and workers stood in Tiananmen Square demanding freedom, democracy, and justice. The Chinese government met their peaceful calls with tanks and bullets, but it could not crush the spirit of resistance.

That same spirit lives on today: in Tibet, where every act of cultural celebration is defiance; in Hong Kong, where protest persists under authoritarian crackdown; and across Taiwan, where resistance thrives.

We honour those who rose up and we stand with all who continue the struggle. Freedom is not forgotten. Resistance lives on.

The Network’s latest report “Tibet Not X̶i̶z̶a̶n̶g̶” examines the CCP regime’s renaming of “Tibet”. A textbook neo-colonial ploy: colonisation by rejecting something by insinuating it as “western” and “colonial”.

Here’s an excerpt from the report:

“The report examines China’s claim that by promoting Xizang over “Tibet”, a Western, colonial name is rejected, and more accurate terminology is being used. In fact, as this report shows, the name Tibet, including variations in spelling and pronunciation, can be found at least as far back as the 14th century and has long been used and accepted by Tibetans as the non-Tibetan language name for their country, which they call བོོད, usually transcribed in the Roman alphabet as “Bod”, “Bhod” or “Bo”. Xizang, on the other hand, is a term of Chinese origin, introduced centuries later and which refers to only half of historic Tibet, the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR), carved out by China in the 1960s.”

On 12th May, Office of Tibet in collaboration with the Japan Parliamentary Support for Tibet organised a discussion with the Japanese Parliamentarians where Dr. Tsewang Gyalpo Arya spoke on the works of the CTA, Dr. Gyal Lo of Tibet Action Institute highlighted the China’s “Ethnic Unity Law” and the China’s Colonial Boarding Schools in Tibet and Dr. Lobsang Yangtso of International Tibet Network focused on China’s dam constructions in Tibet. 16 Japanese Paliamentarians and 8 Representatives of MP attended the meeting
