This week, our policy team showed up. We stood with our partners Californians for Pesticide Reform as they testified at a hearing on the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) — “Putting Public Protection First – Is California’s Pesticide Program Achieving its Purpose?”

Farmworkers from across the state shared firsthand accounts of pesticide exposure and its health impacts, alongside advocates who laid out the gaps in DPR’s current protections.

We were there on behalf of BCPP + Project BLOOM, in support of Líderes Campesinas — to listen to frontline communities, environmental justice orgs, and DPR itself. What we heard shapes how we build our policy work toward reducing breast cancer risk in farmworker communities.

We also brought interpretation equipment, because information should be accessible to everyone impacted by it, regardless of language.

🙌 And while there, we had the honor of meeting Dolores Huerta, the legendary labor leader, civil rights activist, and co-founder of the United Farm Workers union.

Why this matters: pesticides, especially during critical periods of breast development such as prenatally and in early childhood, is associated with an increased risk for developing breast cancer and a range of other serious health harms.

A bill worth watching out for đź‘€

The federal No Toxic Chemicals in Food Packaging Act (HR 9231/S 4724) would ban 3 classes of chemicals — bisphenols, ortho-phthalates, and PFAS — plus 12 individual carcinogens from anything that touches our food. 

From processing equipment to takeout containers, these chemicals shouldn’t be legal to use near what we eat. Prevention starts with policy 👩‍⚖️

A study of premenopausal women found BPA in 99% of urine samples. Women with breast cancer had significantly higher levels of BPS — a chemical sold as a “safer” BPA substitute.

Your morning routine could be exposing you to chemicals linked to breast cancer - and it’s completely legal🚿

“Fragrance,” for example, is a legal loophole. It can hide dozens of unlisted chemicals - and it’s most likely in your moisturizer, shampoo, and body wash right now.

The research is clear: small swaps make a fast difference. In one study, teens who switched to safer personal care products saw endocrine-disrupting chemicals drop by up to 45% - in days, not years.

Research shows that glyphosate exposures during critical periods of breast development may lead to later risk for developing breast cancer. Consumers have a right to know potential risks like these! 

Here’s a breakdown of two pieces of legislation to reverse Monsanto v. Durnell: 
 
✍️ H.R. 9807, the Americans vs. Poisonous Pesticides Act was introduced by Representatives Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Chellie Pingree (D-ME), Thomas Massie (R-KY), and Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).  
The bill would streamline the process for manufacturer-initiated label changes that are more transparent of hazard risks than the EPA-approved label. 
 
✍️ H.R. 9528, the People Over Poison Act was introduced by Representatives Chellie Pingree (D-ME) and Thomas Massie (R-KY).  
This bill would restore the right of people to hold pesticide manufacturers accountable under state law when they fail to warn consumers about the risks of their products.
