Where you live matters, including for how early breast cancer is caught.

Researchers at the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center studied more than 21,500 breast cancer cases diagnosed in South Florida between 2015 and 2019. Women who lived in a community with a Superfund toxic waste site had about 27% higher odds of being diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, meaning cancer that had already spread, than women in communities without one. The link held even after the researchers accounted for age, race, ethnicity, insurance, and neighborhood income.

Why might this be? The 12 Superfund sites in the study were mostly former manufacturing and recycling operations. They contained chemicals such as PCBs, DDT, dioxins, and phthalates, which are known to disrupt hormones, including estrogen. Most of the sites have contaminated groundwater. That’s a particular concern in South Florida, where the water table is shallow and flooding is increasing.

This is an association, not proof of cause. The study couldn’t measure how long each woman lived near a site or how much she was exposed, and the findings still need to be confirmed elsewhere. But it adds to growing evidence that toxic chemicals in our environment play a role in breast cancer.

Cleaning up contaminated sites, and preventing new ones, is part of protecting women from breast cancer.

For decades, October has been widely known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time of pink ribbons and reminders to get screened.

💜 But at BCPP, we call it Breast Cancer Prevention Month.

Early detection and better treatments save lives, and they matter. But we believe we can do more than catch breast cancer early. We can stop it from happening in the first place. 🥬 Can kimchi help your body fight plastic pollution?

Nanoplastics are in our food, water, and packaging. They’re small enough that they may slip past the gut barrier and build up in our organs.

A new study found that a bacterium from kimchi can grab onto nanoplastics:
➡️ It bound 87% of nanoplastics in lab tests.
➡️ It still bound 57% in conditions that mimic the human gut.
🐭 Mice given the bacterium passed more than twice as many nanoplastics out of their bodies.

Though this study is early research in the lab and in mice, it’s a clear reminder that plastic pollution is a health issue.

This isn’t a cure. Probiotics can’t fix a problem we keep making. The real solution is cutting plastic exposure at the source. That means less plastic in food packaging, safer materials, and strong policies that protect everyone, especially communities most exposed. 💪

Plastic particles are hiding inside breast tumors...and at higher levels than in nearby healthy tissue.

A new study out of China examined tissue from 8 breast cancer patients and found microplastics — including polyethylene, PVC, and fluororubber — significantly more concentrated in tumor tissue than in the adjacent, non-cancerous tissue right next to it. Researchers are now exploring possible links between specific plastic types and patients’ BMI and tumor biomarkers.

This study is early, exploratory science on a small group of patients — not proof that plastic exposure causes breast cancer — but it’s exactly the kind of signal that demands bigger studies, and fast.

We can’t keep treating “forever” plastics as background noise in our bodies.

WE DID IT! 🎉AB 1604 is now California law!
Every receipt you grab at the grocery store, gas station, or coffee shop can be coated in bisphenols, hormone-disrupting chemicals linked to breast cancer and reproductive harm.

Cashiers handle them all day, every day. Not anymore. California will phase out BPA and other bisphenols in paper receipts, starting with BPA in 2028 and banning all intentionally added bisphenols by 2029.

🚨 Final push: AB 1604 is on Gov. Newsom’s desk.

AB 1604 would get BPA and other intentionally added bisphenols out of paper receipts. These hormone-disrupting chemicals have been linked to breast cancer and other health concerns, and they can transfer from receipts to our skin within seconds.

Gov. Newsom has until the end of the month to sign or veto the bill.
