"Why does writing still matter? Let’s look at today: I am trying to figure out what I need to get at the grocery store. As I write, I realize what to add. I review my calendar and start listing my tasks for the day. As I do so, I keep adding to the list. I am frustrated with a project, but as a I write out my plans for it, clarity hits. I grab an old journal and read a letter I wrote to my daughter who was 3 months old and is now expecting her first child. My heart feels a tickle of delight. I work on a lesson plan, and as I write, I start to re-think and come up with a better plan.

Writing fills a day! And the creative work that goes into writing makes us better humans; makes the world a bit clearer; and makes our work and our words do something. Our latest book, Writing Still Matters, positions writing as a deeply human act of thinking, meaning-making, and civic participation—one that must be taught intentionally at every grade level and across disciplines.
