Y.E.P- Youth Empowerment Program, UC Berkeley "Never doubt that a small group of people can change the world- indeed it is the only thing that ever has." -Margaret Mead

The UC Berkeley Youth Empowerment Program (Y.E.P.) started April, 2011 with a small group of committed volunteers. Our goal is to make the detainment process more bearable, bring light and energy into a dark situation, and to encourage detained youth to persevere through the social and global forces that keep them at an extreme disadvantage.

What better way to end the year than with great company, fun activities, and delicious food?! This last Sunday, YEP had its final event of the year! We played soccer, ate delicious food, broke a piñata, and made gingerbread houses! A HUGE thank you to all the parents for the yummy food! Also, check out the gingerbread houses that everyone worked so hard to put together! We can’t wait to see everyone again next year! Warm hugs 🤗 ❤️

Yesterday’s Domingo de Desarollo consisted of visiting Redwood Regional Park, where our YEPpers and several East Oakland Latinx families were able to participate in several activities together! From enjoying a delicious meal together; to playing soccer; to talking and learning about the importance of mental health amongst all age groups; to painting butterflies to portray migration, growth, transformation, and symbolism amongst ourselves and our community; and to enjoying an adventurous hike together, as a community we had the opportunity to learn and grow together once more before ending this school year! A huge thanks to the families that attended our Domingo de Desarollo event yesterday. We look forward to our upcoming summer events and activities together and can’t wait to see everyone again!
Con mucho amor, YEP.

Last week, YEP in partnership with the Sierra Lakes Club's I.C.O(Inspiring Connections Outdoors) program led several families from our Oakland community on a hike around Lake Chabot. Often times we here at YEP are asked what exactly it is that we do. Upon reflection one of the most important things we do, is build community among members in the Oakland Latinx community. The pictures taken here on that warm Sunday morning not only highlight the high points of that day but the warmth and joy of the community we have the honor and privilege of working with!

Meet our new Co-Director who is helping to build up YEP and lead change, Lissa García!!!

Hola! My name is Lissa and I am a third year from Chula Vista, California. I am majoring in Ethnic Studies and minoring in Education at UC Berkeley. My passion lies in growing and learning alongside youth of color and together creating and imagining a better world. Being a part of YEP has taught me the importance of community and creating a space for intergenerational learning. I am blessed to have met so many beautiful and inspiring families through YEP that remind me of home.

Meet our new Events Chair, Natalia Zepeda!

Hello (: I’m a chicana from Los Angeles county who heavily resonates with Guadalajaran Mexican culture. I’m eighteen years old and a freshman studying Spanish and, hopefully, Latin American Studies. I love mariachi, rancheras, boleros, and huapangos as far as music goes, and I love to cook the food that I grew up with. I swam for three years and am now trying out ballet folklorico. I have travelled through 10 Mexican states and very much enjoy swimming in waterfalls and rivers and the ocean. I am super family oriented and love kids. I hope I end up studying abroad in Mexico City this upcoming fall, as I want deeper insight to education in Mexico and prevalent ideologies there. I hope to become a lawyer and start an organization supporting indigenous and rural-area education in Latin America. I love being a part of YEP because it reminds me of home and reminds me that when I was in the same position as the families we’re working with, I felt like I wanted to be guided and supported a bit more. There is such a bright future ahead of the immigrant and underserved community, and we, as YEP members, have the blessing of watching them grow and discover new interests and resources.

Meet our awesome Outreach Chair Evelyn Rivas!

Greetings/Saludos! My name is Evelyn Rivas and I am a senior studying Social Welfare at UC Berkeley. What I love most about the Youth Empowerment Program, is getting to build community and a learning environment with both our youth and parents. I look forward to continue building relationships and making even the smallest difference in the educational lives of our community!

NEW LEADERS!!!

As some of you may know, YEP has entered an exciting time as some of our past leaders graduated, providing space for new leaders to continue YEP's important work and have an impact on East Oakland's Latinx Community.

We would like to introduce these new leaders to all of you; so, without further ado, meet our Finance Chair Namita Chandra!

Hi I’m Namita and I’m a first year from Carlisle, Massachusetts, near Boston. I’m the new Finance Chair for YEP. I don’t really have any idea what I want to study but I know what I am interested in so that’s what I am pursuing in my first year at Cal. I want to continue to explore and figure out what I want to dedicate myself to. That is part of the reason why I joined YEP because I wanted to explore my various interests. What I love about YEP is how we are working locally and so close to Berkeley community and that there are amazing people that live just outside of our small area. I joined this club because I love working with kids, but what I found was that families and friends are also involved in our organization, which creates a genuine community. There is a lot to learn from other communities and I am happy to be a part of more than just one.
