Revolutionary Roots: Isham Blackenship, Sr. is today's chapter American Revolution patriot ancestor.

What does it take to keep a military cavalry regiment moving? A lot of raw grit, heavy horses, and a patriot willing to feed them! 🐎🌾

This week, the Lewis and Clark Chapter highlights Private Isham Blankenship, Sr. Isham didn't just ride on active duty with the Virginia Cavalry; he essentially hosted the Continental Army on his own land. Official Virginia Revolutionary Public Claims show that Isham provided 216 pasturages to forage and sustain vital military mounts on the front line. In a war won by rapid reconnaissance and tactical speed, keeping those horses fed was a monumental win for George Washington’s forces! After independence was secured, this father of 11 pioneered his way down to North Carolina, leaving behind a proud legacy of colonial resourcefulness.

🔎 Tip from Staff Genealogist Bill Burchfield

When researching your family history, don’t overlook “the other census records” — tax lists!

While they aren’t technically census records, tax lists can provide many of the same details, such as where an ancestor lived and when they appeared in a community. In some cases, they can reveal even more, including property ownership, acreage, livestock, and other clues about an ancestor’s life and financial standing.

If your ancestor seems to disappear between census years, tax records may be the key to filling in the gaps and keeping your research on track.

Happy hunting! 📜
