The very Personal Rewards of Volunteering โฆ..
A note from our Conservation Outreach Director, Jim Prince โจ
The Friends of Hunting Island (FOHI) is operated entirely by dedicated volunteers. With a mandate to both support and protect the wonders of the park our many volunteer opportunities
include- trail maintenance, water quality testing, sea turtle protection, shorebird protection, community event hosting, garden building, fundraising, direct material support for the park and
generally raising awareness of the park and its natural but fragile beauty.
The great news is that all of these opportunities are open to any member of FOHI who wants to become involved. But, you may be thinking we all have such busy lives, why get involved with
something that doesnโt benefit us directly ?
The answer is we all DO benefit directly ! Besides the obvious communal pleasure of seeing the
parkโs wildlife and beautiful wildplaces thrive and persist for future generations of visitors, volunteers reap many sometimes subtle but valuable personal rewards.
1) Volunteering is a great way to form new friendships with like minded people and stronger
bonds with existing friends through shared experiences.
2) Volunteering for a meaningful cause has been shown to increase self esteem and overall well being and offers a role for retirees who have lost a work identity.
3) Volunteering is a social activity and strengthens your connectivity with our overall community and social activity has the additional health benefit of increasing longevity and quality of life.
4) Volunteering is a great chance for all of us to โpay it forwardโ. Contributing to the legacy of all the dedicated people who have come before us while cementing our own legacy as having
made a difference.
5) Volunteering turns a feeling of helplessness into a feeling of fulfillment as we gain a sense of accomplishment cooperatively working with others including State Park staff and a diverse
group of professional Goverment and Non-profit Conservation organizations all towards the same goals.
So reach out, join up and find your niche. I can be contacted at
[email protected] for more information on our volunteer programs and projects.
Hope to hear from you!
