The new Board is UP!

FOHI Adopt-a-Nest (a little idea we had years ago) has grown to the point we needed to call in our friends at AlphaGraphics Beaufort - Bluffton - Hilton Head for reinfocements!

With care and pride, they created this special piece and it is installed at the Lighthouse Beach entrance ๐Ÿ๏ธ

Lynne Franks is the mastermind behind this project and we thank her for all that she does to manage the new parents ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š

Thank you to all the adoptees who have a nest to nurture this summer!! ๐Ÿข๐Ÿชน

Lots of activity out there! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

We appreciate all the visitors this summer and having completed our 2026 critical shorebird sanctuary fencing, we keep identifying large swaths of the area due to continued erosion and mother natureโ€™s bounties.

Please mind the location and have published some thoughtful reminders for this busy summer below.

We thank everyone for their care of the shorebirds and sea birds at Hunting Island State Park.

Nope, its not bulldozer tracks on the beach, its a BIG momma! ๐Ÿข๐Ÿšœ

An older nest was in her way to lay her eggs, so she went through it like an Abrams tank. She then climbed the dune to lay her nest.

Whoa Nest 70!!!

The very Personal Rewards of Volunteering โ€ฆ..

A note from our Conservation Outreach Director, Jim Prince โœจ

The Friends of Hunting Island (FOHI) is operated entirely by dedicated volunteers. With a mandate to both support and protect the wonders of the park our many volunteer opportunities
include- trail maintenance, water quality testing, sea turtle protection, shorebird protection, community event hosting, garden building, fundraising, direct material support for the park and
generally raising awareness of the park and its natural but fragile beauty.

The great news is that all of these opportunities are open to any member of FOHI who wants to become involved. But, you may be thinking we all have such busy lives, why get involved with
something that doesnโ€™t benefit us directly ?

The answer is we all DO benefit directly ! Besides the obvious communal pleasure of seeing the
parkโ€™s wildlife and beautiful wildplaces thrive and persist for future generations of visitors, volunteers reap many sometimes subtle but valuable personal rewards.

1) Volunteering is a great way to form new friendships with like minded people and stronger
bonds with existing friends through shared experiences.

2) Volunteering for a meaningful cause has been shown to increase self esteem and overall well being and offers a role for retirees who have lost a work identity.

3) Volunteering is a social activity and strengthens your connectivity with our overall community and social activity has the additional health benefit of increasing longevity and quality of life.

4) Volunteering is a great chance for all of us to โ€œpay it forwardโ€. Contributing to the legacy of all the dedicated people who have come before us while cementing our own legacy as having
made a difference.

5) Volunteering turns a feeling of helplessness into a feeling of fulfillment as we gain a sense of accomplishment cooperatively working with others including State Park staff and a diverse
group of professional Goverment and Non-profit Conservation organizations all towards the same goals.

So reach out, join up and find your niche. I can be contacted at
[email protected] for more information on our volunteer programs and projects.

Hope to hear from you!
- Jim Prince

Our National Treasure - Lighthouse Director Ted Panayotoff, has been an extraordinary member of Friends of Hunting Island State Park, Inc. and Hunting Island Beach / Lighthouse โœจ

A gentleman full of energy, passion, historical knowledge and genuine stewardship for this Beacon and Landmark.

It was a joy to witness his happiness of the opening of his beloved Lighthouse and give the public a little chunk of his love and dedication to it ๐Ÿ’›

Thank you Ted for all you do!!

๐Ÿ–Š๏ธA special note from a Mom and her son from Savannah, Georgia ๐Ÿฅฐ

My 5 year old son and I were on the beach camping on May 19th when nest 15 and 16 were found.

The group of volunteers were so kind and talked to us about the nests, showed us a turtle egg, and even gave my 5 year old several books on Sea Turtles to take home.

He was THRILLED and told everyone about it. Buddy, one of the volunteers who gifted my son the books, said he would be happy to let us know when the nests hatch.

Thanks again for all you do and please tell your volunteers that they made our day/trip!

May Nesting Madness ๐Ÿข๐Ÿชฃ

47 nests and the month isnt over yet!

Records in 2022, below, show the 2026 curve trend this year. As always, there is a pattern that develops for how they land and why.

Friends of Hunting Island Sea Turtle Conservation Project is having a rigorous season working hard in all types of weather conditions, and zones, to meet the needs of the nests ๐Ÿ’š

Thank you to all volunteers for your solid dedication ๐Ÿ˜Š

The picture(s) were taken by permitted volunteers under permit
2026-MTP537. Following all rules and guidelines, only permitted individuals are allowed to engage in sea turtle conservation activities.
