We were so excited to team up with WWNO’s SeaChange podcast to share a story of hope: how moving eggs from a healthy colony to a historic nesting site — a technique called translocation — is helping bring seabirds back.

In Maine, it’s helped restore Atlantic Puffins. In Louisiana, it’s helping Brown Pelicans reclaim their historic range. Different birds, different coastlines, same lesson: when we act, seabirds can recover.

When you visit the beaches in Cameron Parish and Grand Isle this summer, keep an eye out for colorful new signs. Audubon Delta is part of a national campaign to encourage beachgoers to provide extra space for nesting birds.

Yesterday we introduced Audubon Delta’s Share the Shore campaign. What exactly are the benefits of detouring around nesting sites? Audubon’s Coastal Bird Technician, Chloe St. Germain-Vermillion explains the benefits of giving birds space while visiting the beaches this summer.

Top reasons to give beach-nesting birds space:

1. Reducing unnecessary disturbance. Human presence stresses birds, causing them to flush (fly). This leaves their nests vulnerable to predators and heat exposure, which can ultimately kill their young. Birds experiencing repeated and prolonged disturbance events may even abandon a nesting site altogether.

2. Preventing accidental injuries to nests and chicks. The nests and chicks of beach-nesting birds have evolved to be highly camouflaged. Unfortunately, this means beachgoers who get too close to nesting sites run the risk of accidentally crushing eggs and flightless chicks, whose only defense is to freeze in place.

3. Avoiding angry birds! Least Terns may be tiny and cute, but they are fearless protectors of their young and will mob you if you get too close. Harsh calls, dive-bombing, and defecation are all ways they deter predators and are a sure sign you are too close! If you want to keep your beach vacation relaxed and p**p free, set up your beach towels a safe distance away from any nesting area.

4. Witnessing special wildlife moments. A little bit of distance and respect go a long way. When birds don’t perceive you as a threat, you can observe their natural nesting behavior. You’ll see adult terns gently fluffing out their feathers to shade their eggs, mated pairs sharing fish, and fuzzy chicks running between blades of sea oats. It makes you appreciate how special it is to have these birds nesting right outside your front door.

Summer across the Delta has been filled with adventure, discovery, and hands-on conservation!

From Arkansas to Mississippi and Louisiana, young people are exploring the outdoors and learning about the birds and habitats that make the Delta so special.

🛶 At the Pascagoula River Audubon Center, 54 campers explored river habitats by kayak, identified marsh plants, and spotted coastal birds along Rhodes Bayou.

🐾📚 Our Audubon Delta - Mississippi Coastal Stewardship Program team visited the Humane Society of South Mississippi's Club Paws Summer Camp and the Waveland Public Library Summer Reading Program, sharing the importance of protecting our coastal wildlife and habitats.

🌳 At the Little Rock Audubon Center, 38 students kicked off another summer of outdoor learning through our long-standing partnership with Pulaski County Youth Services.

Today Audubon Delta hosted Congressman Mike Ezell, Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith, and Senator Roger Wicker staff to share how we are working year-round to ensure coastal MS’s beaches and barrier islands are healthy, safe spaces for birds and people.

Part of a global network, our Motus tower in Gulfport is helping to monitor tagged birds that visit MS from far and near—providing crucial science to better inform conservation efforts and investments while sharing the wonder of migrating birds to support our state’s nature tourism.

We appreciate our Congressional leaders’ attention to crucial conservation matters for MS, such as protecting our coastal landscapes, sustaining our MS Sound, and restoring our urban green spaces.
