We’re proud to help students build confidence and essential water safety skills! Over four days, 59 second- and third-grade students in East Baton Rouge participated in swim and water safety lessons. Students learned skills including swimming, floating, safely exiting the water, life jacket use, boating safety, and “Reach, Throw, Don’t Go.” These lessons provide practical tools to help students stay safer in and around the water.

This month, we are honored to spotlight Bryan Piazza! Bryan has been a member of the Y for well over 10 years. He initially joined with a goal of getting stronger, with back pain being one of his main motivations. Today, his back is healthy, and he has gained strength that continues to positively impact his everyday life.

Bryan’s favorite activity at the Y is weightlifting, but for him, the Y is about much more than fitness. He especially values the community he has found at the Charles W. Lamar Jr. YMCA.

“I love the community at the Y. I’ve met many new friends and always enjoy seeing them and talking to them,” Bryan shares. “The Charles W. Lamar Jr. YMCA has a terrific community of people who come from many different backgrounds and experiences. I’ve broadened my world by getting to know them.”

When asked what he would say to someone considering joining the Y, Bryan emphasizes that everyone is welcome. “The Y is a nice place with a great community. Especially for people who may feel intimidated by the gym, everyone is welcome, and they will find it a kind and helpful place to meet their fitness goals, no matter what they are.”

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Carly Grace Madison, who has been part of the YMCA team for one year. During her time at the Y, she has worked in a variety of roles, including the front desk, summer camp, Kids Zone, and with our fit staff.

Carly’s favorite part of working at the Y is connecting with members. She enjoys meeting both new and longtime members and having meaningful conversations that help make everyone feel at home.

Her supervisor describes Carly as helpful, calm, and friendly, especially during busy times. She is dedicated to making every guest feel welcomed and valued from the moment they walk through the doors.

We’re grateful to have Carly Grace as part of our team and appreciate the warmth and positivity she brings to the Y each day!
