10:00 AM: Stage to set flags, setup tent, and mission briefing. NOTE: There will be a manned PGR Tent during the event to answer questions about the PGR and to hand out brochures. We will have donuts available for snacks. Please text Roland (225-931-4725) to let us know if you plan to attend. We need a correct number to make sure we have enough lunches for our volunteers.

1:00 PM: Presentation of colors and start of event. The PGR will help with parking and ticket sales. Band starts playing. All judging and events will take place with the help of Oden Sons and the PGR.

4:00 PM: Secure flags, tent, and event.

NOTE: The weather forecast is calling for sunny skies with a high temperature of 83 degrees and a 0% chance of rain at this time.

Honor Mission
William Pershing Butler, KIA

About the Mission:

William Pershing “Billy” Butler, 22, gave the ultimate sacrifice of his life on December 27, 1942. He was born to his late parents, William Albert Butler, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Wright Butler on May 10, 1920, in Ashley County, Arkansas. He was living in Morehouse Parish and on August 15, 1940, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Forces to proudly serve his country. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Prisoner of War Medals, and his loss is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manilla American Cemetery in the Philippines.

Technician, Fourth Grade William P. Butler, U.S. Army Air Forces, was assigned to the 5th Air Corps Squadron, 20th Air Base Group based at Nichols Field, northern Luzon, when Japanese forces suddenly began bombing on December 8, 1941, and invaded beginning on December 10. On December 22, General Douglas MacArthur ordered a complete withdrawal of U.S. forces to the Bataan Peninsula to hold out for reinforcements which never came. Despite facing shortages of food, medicine, and other supplies, intense fighting continued for four months until the inevitable fall of the Bataan Peninsula on April 9. 1942 and of Corregidor Island on May 6, 1942.

After U.S. forces surrendered in the Philippines, approximately 12,000 American servicemen
suddenly and tragically became prisoners of war. The Japanese captors then forced them at
gunpoint to endure the infamous 65-mile Bataan Death March toward their prison destination. After enduring months of brutal treatment, inhumane conditions, and total despair, Billy finally succumbed to extreme malnutrition on December 27, 1942, at Cabanatuan Prisoner of War Camp No. 1 in Central Luzon, Philippines.

Billy was born into a family of tenant farmers who lived in the small community of Parkdale, Arkansas. They worked as sharecroppers on a cotton plantation plowing fields and picking cotton as well as taking on other work for survival as they struggled through the hard times they lived through. In the late 30’s, they eventually moved to find jobs in town when manual labor farming opportunities became extremely scarce. Billy later moved in with relatives in Bastrop to work as a grocery store clerk until he decided to enlist in the Army Air Force and proudly serve his country.

James White served in the Navy from 1969 to 1972. He was stationed on the USS Truxtun (DLGN-35) HP. His known medals are the Vietnam Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal.

John Westley Sikes serve our Country with the United States Army . He was a decorated veteran, having recieved multiple medals while serving three tours in Vietnam. He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved to be on the water, fishing and camping were two of his favorite hobbies. He was also an avid football fan. He could always be found cheering on his beloved Saints and LSU teams. He also loved to read.
