The Clearing is a three-day gathering for Black q***r and trans people who carry the deep wound of a world that denies our belovedness. Here, we return to the river that has always healed us—our music, our breath, our way of seeing against the grain and walking against the current. We will draw on the power of Spirituals, Blues, Jazz, Gospel, and Hip Hop—our lament, our gutbucket truth, our improvisation, our embodied hope, our healing rage—to reclaim our stories and free what domination tried to drown. Through song, ritual, dance, silence, and shared tenderness, we lay down the mask, lift up our names, celebrate our bodies, and let our souls be retrieved and re-membered. If you are longing for a place where the hurt is honored and the healing is real, come to The Clearing—where we are called beloved at last.

About the facilitator: Rev. Lynice Pinkard is a Black writer, teacher, healer, pastor, recovering addict, and public intellectual operating at the intersection of Christianity, economics, and social change. Her current work is dedicated to decolonizing the human spirit and freeing people from what she calls “empire affective disorder.” Her commitment is to inspire and nurture a new generation of Spirit-filled servant leaders dedicated to the remediation of day-to-day suffering, the building of collective resilience for transformative change, and the pursuit of structural and systemic justice in the world. Lynice currently serves as the pastor of the United Church of Christ East Goshen in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

If you feel a deep connection to Nature, have an interest in Celtic Spirituality, and a longing to be amongst the stunning autumn foliage at Kirkridge, this annual weekend retreat may indeed call you ‘home’ to the mountain.

Throughout our weekend together we will explore some of the many surrounding lessons and gifts available to us as we ‘walk awake’ together into the Celtic New Year.

On the Celtic Wheel of the Year: we are entering the time of Samhain, the last of the three Celtic Harvest Festivals and the return of the dark half of the year. The ancient Celts believed everything began in the darkness hence why Samhain is referred to as the ‘Celtic New Year’. In realms of Celtic Spirituality, it is a time when the veil between differing worlds becomes its thinnest. A ‘betwixt and between’ period of ‘no-time’ when the spirits of the ancestors, those recently passed, and the world of the Fae might slip between the veil to communicate with us.

An annual event, as in Nature, each year this retreat offers something uniquely different to those who attend. The weekend will ebb and flow according to the energy of the group, the weather, the Land, and Nature’s offerings. Structured group gatherings may include sessions on various aspects of Celtic Spirituality (past and present) with attention on the Celtic New Year and the honoring of the ancestors, nature walks with focus on recognizing and connecting with the ‘seen and unseen’ in Nature, and the continual weaving of the history and mystery connecting this mountain range and the Isle of Iona, Scotland. The weekend will also include an eclectic mix of ritual, ceremony, morning mediations, time to walk and wander, song, and poetry.

Additionally, on the Saturday evening all will have the opportunity to attend Columcille Megalith Park’s memorable Samhain/Celtic New Year Celebration* set amongst its torchlit Standing Stones. All attending are welcome to dress up in their best Celtic or Halloween attire for Columcille’s event, if they wish.

Join us in the mountains for a weekend of silence. Kirkridge staff will offer some brief communal ritual spaces, but most of the time will be yours for whatever you need. For decades, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Questioning men have been gathering at Kirkridge to build community, sing, laugh, tell stories, remember the departed, share our strength and wisdom, and soak in the beauty of the mountain. This annual retreat is for GBTQ men across the generations who are on a spiritual path. We welcome seekers, ministers, single, partnered, those new to the community and those who have been coming for years- come as you are!

The program contains structured presentations and time for reflection, discussion, singing, and small groups. There will also be ample unstructured time for solitude, walking the land, socializing, and napping.

The retreat leader this year is Dave Howser, a therapist and pastoral counselor in Chicago, who grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of Maryland and has attended this retreat for many years. Other men will also participate in program leadership throughout the weekend and will help shape the retreat experience.
