A tree-lined street is more than a beautiful part of a neighborhood. Mature trees can actually change how a city handles heat, rain and everyday life.

Their leaves provide shade, preventing sidewalks, roads, buildings and parked cars from absorbing as much direct sunlight. Trees also release water through transpiration, which uses heat from the environment and contributes to cooling the surrounding area.

That becomes especially valuable during hot weather. Pavement, concrete and rooftops absorb solar energy throughout the day and can continue releasing that heat after sunset. When cities lose vegetation, the result can contribute to the urban heat-island effect, leaving built-up neighborhoods warmer than nearby areas.

Trees also help manage rain. Their leaves and branches intercept rainfall, while their roots can help water enter the soil instead of immediately becoming runoff. At the same time, urban trees store carbon, capture some airborne particles and provide food and shelter for birds, insects and other wildlife.

And the benefits aren’t only environmental.

Access to green, tree-filled spaces has been associated with more walking, less exposure to extreme heat and improvements in several measures of human well-being.

Of course, mature trees need planning and care. Cities have to choose species suited to the local climate, provide enough room for roots, and design streets around sidewalks, utilities and other infrastructure.

But when trees are treated as essential parts of a neighborhood rather than decoration added afterward, they can make streets cooler, greener and much more comfortable.

Sometimes one of the most effective ways to improve a city is simply to give its trees enough room to grow.
