ABET We're a nonprofit quality assurance organization focused on higher education programs. Our more than 2,200 experts come from industry, academia, and government.

Through our services and global partnerships, we help prepare the next generation of students build a safer, more efficient and sustainable world. We accredit college and university programs in the disciplines of applied and natural science, computing, engineering and engineering technology at the associate, bachelor's and master's degree levels. With ABET accreditation, students, employers and the society we serve can be confident that a program meets the quality standards that produce graduates prepared to enter a global workforce. We began as the educational standard against which professional engineers in the United States were held for licensure. Today, after more than 80 years, our standards continue to play this fundamental role and have become the basis of quality for over 40 disciplines all over the world. Developed by technical professionals from ABET’s member societies, our criteria focus on what students experience and learn. Sought worldwide, ABET’s voluntary peer-review process is highly respected because it adds critical value to academic programs in the technical disciplines, where quality, precision and safety are of the utmost importance. They give their time and effort supporting quality assurance activities around the world by serving as program evaluators, commissioners, board members and advisors.

On Indigenous People’s Day 2026, we honor and celebrate members of Indigenous communities for their contributions in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. This day calls us to recognize the wisdom, resilience and creativity of Indigenous peoples and to reflect on how their knowledge systems continue to enrich our shared story.

ABET applauds organizations that work to reduce barriers in Indigenous communities, such as The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), the Society for Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS), and the Young Indigenous Women’s STEM Academy in Australia.

These organizations work to break down barriers of participation for Indigenous peoples. In addition, they celebrate and promote community members who have made significant contributions within STEM to provide positive Indigenous role models.

At ABET and within the IDEA Council, we encourage you to reflect on the ways Indigenous perspectives have shaped your own life, workplace or educational journey. Whether through mentorship, cultural traditions or innovative approaches to problem-solving, Indigenous influences offer valuable insights into how we learn, lead and create.

What does it take to engineer a device that keeps a heart in rhythm?

ABET's Industry Advisory Council (IAC) got a close look last month at Medtronic's Mounds View campus in Minnesota, home to the company's work on pacemakers, defibrillators and other cardiac devices.

The tour showed the kind of work engineering graduates step into, and that is the insight the IAC brings to ABET: what industry needs from new engineers and how programs can prepare them.

ABET saw this work in action by way of workshopping on student skills, engineering society engagement and best practices for industry advisory boards.

We also celebrated Matt Conwell as he concludes his time on the council. Thank you, Matt, for the time and perspective you have given ABET.

And thank you to Medtronic for hosting us in Minneapolis and opening your doors to our group.
