On May 22nd, we celebrated the 17th anniversary of B'More Clubhouse, cut the ribbon on our brand new elevator, and had a cookout. Despite the rainy weather, we had over 125 people attend!

We were grateful to have some of our elected officials in attendance, including Senate President Senator Bill Ferguson, Speaker Pro Tem Delegate Luke Clippinger, Councilman Zac Blanchard, and Councilman Jermaine Jones. The Mayor's Office of Recovery Programs was also represented by Director Elizabeth Tatum.

Our elevator was made possible by the generous support of France-Merrick Foundation, Middendorf Foundation, Francis Goelet Charitable Lead Trust, the State of Maryland via our District 46 representatives, and Peter and ChiChi Bosworth. Thank you all so much for making this critically important project possible. Our building is now fully accessible for our members, staff, and guests.

During the Senate President's remarks, he shared that the Clubhouse will be receiving new state funding to repair our roof and historic cornice on our firehouse building. We're thankful for the support and excited to get to work!

If that wasn't enough, we also hosted our first annual B'More Gives day, a one day online campaign where we had an ambitious goal of raising $10,000 to support our Culinary program. We were blown away by the remarkable support and easily surpassed our goal by raising $18,500!

The event was the perfect way to wrap up an exciting and eventful Mental Health Awareness month. Thank you to all of our friends and partners for making it such a special day!

We couldn't let this great day go by without taking some time outside to appreciate it! Here are some ways that nature walks can be a great way to practice self care and stress relief that can benefit your mental health: 1. Being outside increases vitamin D production. 2.The connection with nature can provide a sense of belonging and connectedness, reducing feelings of loneliness and isolation. 3. Engaging with nature through touch encourages mindfulness. 4. The sensory input from nature helps to regulate the nervous system. If you haven't been outside today, get outside and touch some grass and rocks!πŸŒ±πŸ—ΏπŸŒž

For our final of Mental Health Awareness Month, we are so lucky to hear from Lyra N. about her journey with mental health! Read more below:

β€œMy mental health journey started when I was very young. As a child, I struggled with depression and my autism. I performed poorly in school and had no interest in social activities. As I grew older, the isolation and stigma grew overwhelming and by 14 years old, I went to a mental hospital for the first time.
A combination of a difficult job and a lack of peer connections caused me to start abusing alcohol in my early twenties. This resulted in me losing my job and few friends. By 25, I was living with my mother and she was considering placing me in a group home. I was completely nonfunctional in my daily life. That year, a tragic event, combined with the pandemic, my borderline personality disorder brought me to rock bottom.
I attended many treatment programs for years, struggling all the while, until finding out about B’More Clubhouse from my provider last summer. From the day in October that I first came through these doors, my life has improved greatly. I started living independently again and met new friends. My mother was shocked at my sudden turnaround. She never believed that I was capable of living independently before.
B’More Clubhouse gives me purpose and something to look forward to each day. I know that I am helping others and making a real impact. Recently, I have been lending my talents to the Research Fellowship with Fountain House United. I can hardly believe the amount of progress I have made, both professionally and personally. I am even about to go to college to become an addiction counselor!
When I come to B’More Clubhouse, my fellow members greet me warmly. I know that they are genuinely happy to see me, and share in my personal journey towards recovery. Coming to the Clubhouse always improves my day, and I try to attend whenever I feel isolated at home. I do many things at the Clubhouse, but my two favorite tasks are data entry and kitchen work. I am excited to see what the Clubhouse will help me achieve next, and for the first time in my life, I look to the future with hope.”
