CorpsTHAT is an organization aimed at supporting the inclusion of Deaf and Hard of Hearing community Looking for a summer job in the outdoors?

CorpsTHAT strives to create a safe and inclusive place for Deaf people and the ASL Community in the conservation corps and outdoor worlds. We promote ASL Inclusion Crews within Conservation Corps, provide training about inclusion and working with interpreters in wilderness settings, and network with outdoor organizations to create more ASL accessible spaces in our world. CorpsTHAT’s Inclusion Training Working with the Deaf Community in the Outdoors
Virtual Workshop | $50 per participant
June 23rd | 1-3pm

A 2-hour training session for outdoor partners and professionals who want to learn more about inclusion and access when working with or engaging the Deaf community in outdoor programming and conservation projects.

This training is designed for outdoor fields, including:
- Conservation: land managers and conservation corps
- Recreation: guides, park interpreters, and outdoor educators

Each training will cover:
- Introduction to the Deaf community and Deaf culture
- Resources for learning ASL
- Hiring qualified interpreters
- Working with interpreters and understanding boundaries
- Working with Deaf and hearing leaders
- Communication and safety in outdoor settings
- Minimizing risk and responding to emergencies

American Sign Language Level 3- is our intermediate course. This course is for students who already can hold a basic interaction in ASL. Students will refine their use of basic sentence types focusing on outdoor terminology and topics and try out their skills through interactions, such as giving and receiving directions and expand their extensive outdoor-related vocabularies.

4 reasons to learn ASL for the Outdoors- Reason 4: Connect with the Deaf Community!

Last summer we partnered with Environment for the Americas Bird Ability interns and our local Feminist Birding DMV chapter to host birding events with our local community. This Deaf led birding event welcomed birders from the Deaf Community and birders who didn't know how to sign. ASL interpreters were provided for those who didn't sign but many of the birders from the Feminist Birding DMV chapter knew some signs or had taken our ASL for the Outdoor classes! This created deeper the connections and spread the love of birding and outdoors to more individuals!

Virtual Classes | 5 week long | $250

American Sign Language Level 4- is our Intermediate- Advance Course.
ASL Level 4 is our intermediate-advanced course, designed for students who have completed ASL Level 3 or have a strong foundation in American Sign Language.
Students will continue to expand conversational skills, practice more complex sentence structures, and build vocabulary for a wider range of real-world situations, with a focus on practical communication in work, volunteer, and outdoor settings.

CorpsTHAT American Sign Language for the Outdoors Level 2 course is starting May 18th. Do you know how to greet yourself in ASL and have knowledge of some basic signs but want to learn more signs geared for the outdoors?! Take our level 2 course!

Level 2 - Class C: Tuesdays and Thursdays | 7-8 pm EST | 5/19 - 6/18

American Sign Language Level 2 is our Beginning- Intermediate Course. This level is for students who have beginning knowledge of ASL and are looking to continue their study. Students will learn basic conversational skills and vocabulary- in addition to learning how to describe directions and one specialized outdoor topic will be covered more in depth depending on students' interest in this course.

4 Reasons to learn ASL for the Outdoors: Reason 2: Creates a more inclusive outdoor space!

With our conservation corps crew and internship placement programs, our partners have taken our ASL for the Outdoor courses to better connect and support our members but they also are now able to create a more inclusive outdoor space. For Deaf visitors to parks or forests when they meet a ranger who knows ASL their experience is often more positive and they are more likely to come back, become stewards of the lands and support our public lands.
