CorpsTHAT CorpsTHAT is an organization aimed at supporting the inclusion of Deaf and Hard of Hearing community Looking for a summer job in the outdoors?

CorpsTHAT strives to create a safe and inclusive place for Deaf people and the ASL Community in the conservation corps and outdoor worlds. We promote ASL Inclusion Crews within Conservation Corps, provide training about inclusion and working with interpreters in wilderness settings, and network with outdoor organizations to create more ASL accessible spaces in our world. It's coming up on SOL FEST Season! 🌞❄️

To recognize 10 years since we founded CorpsTHAT, our annual fundraiser Sol Fest, is happening earlier this year. Save the Dates: November 16th - December 21st.

Sol Fest is a Trail-a-Thon, CorpsTHAT's annual fundraiser. Participants raise funds for Deaf Outdoor Programing while getting outside themselves, tracking their hours and miles to win prizes!

This year we secured a matching grant from the National Forest Foundation. Thanks to our Sol Fest 2025 supporters who raised matching funds, we are able to run our Internship Placement Program with the Green Mountain and Finger Lake National Forest this Fall! Meet our three interns who are out on the trails working hard and follow along to see their work in the Green Mountains of Vermont!

Sabina Gomez
She/her/they/them
Sabina graduated from Skagit Valley Community College with an associates degree in music in 2023. Now, thanks to CorpsTHAT, Sabina is excited to be exploring outdoor careers! Sabina’s favorite park is the Deception Pass state park in Washington State. What she is looking forward to the most in this internship program is to work with other Deaf people, deepen her sense of deaf identity, admire nature, and be more in tune with her body. As well as becoming a more confident deaf person in the outdoors!

Micheal 'Ike' Paige
He/him
Ike went to trade school for three years earning car mechanic certifications. Ike has worked with CorpsTHAT since 2023 as a crew member, assistant crew leader, and as a crew leader for our partner crew, PAOC. Ike’s favorite park is High Point Lake. This fall, he is looking forward to experiencing every moment in the program, growing his leadership skills and most importantly enjoying nature!

Yomma Qingyow
He/him
Yomma went to NTID and graduated in Civil Architectural Drafting Technology and then went on to study Civil Engineering Technology at RIT. His favorite outdoor space is Lake Placid, New York, adventuring to White Mountain and his favorite activity is adventure cycling! Not yet a CorpsTHAT alumni, Yomma is looking forward to becoming one through this internship program and to gaining more experience, growing personally and finding more adventures!

Do you already know some ASL but want to learn more about the Deaf Outdoor Experience while practicing your ASL, outdoor terms and conversational skill level? This class is for you!

Our ASL Level 5 courses, invite Deaf outdoor enthusiasts and professionals to the class, weekly, to share their experiences and outdoor journeys with our students to practice ASL Outdoor terminology and conversational skills.

Sign up for our Wilderness First Aid Course in Rochester, NY October 30 - November 1!!

Join CorpsTHAT for a three-day, hands-on Wilderness First Aid training taught entirely in American Sign Language. This course equips participants of all outdoor experience levels with practical skills to handle common outdoor illnesses and injuries, perform patient assessments, and make informed evacuation decisions. Ideal for Deaf Community members who are outdoor professionals or who recreate in remote settings or ASL interpreters looking to gain more outdoor interpreting skills.

This course will be hosted in-person at Tinker Nature Park - Nature Center in Pittsford, NY. Please contact us if you have any questions about local lodging options or the site facilities.

CorpsTHAT American Sign Language for the Outdoors Level 2 course is starting October 19th. Do you know how to greet yourself in ASL and have knowledge of some basic signs but want to learn more signs geared for the outdoors?! Join us for ASL in the Outdoors level 2 course!

Level 2 - Class E: Tuesdays and Thursdays | 7-8 pm EST | 10/19-11/18

American Sign Language Level 2 is our Beginning- Intermediate Course. This level is for students who have beginning knowledge of ASL and are looking to continue their study. Students will learn basic conversational skills and vocabulary- in addition to learning how to describe directions and one specialized outdoor topic will be covered more in depth depending on students' interest in this course.

Mondays and Wednesdays | 8-9pm EST / 5-6pm PST | 10/9-11/18

American Sign Language Level 1- is our Beginning Course. This level is for students who have little to no previous knowledge of ASL. Students will begin to learn basic conversational skills and introductory vocabulary. In this class, students will learn how to communicate with Deaf people while working, recreating, or volunteering in the outdoor field.

A NEW ADDITION! SATURDAY COURSES! In an effort to fit more schedules, CorpsTHAT is now offering our ASL for the Outdoor courses on the weekend!

CorpsTHAT’s ASL for the Outdoors beginner level course, Class S meets virtually on SATURDAYS at 9:30-11:00am EST for 5-weeks starting on October 3rd and ending on October 31st. A make up course scheduled for the following week, if needed.
All classes are virtual and cost $250/student.

Stewardship - NTID Northeast 2026 CorpsTHAT Programing

CorpsTHAT is continuing our educational High School Stewardship Program this fall by partnering with National Technical Institute of the Deaf (NTID) Youth Programs. Our Stewardship Program will provide Deaf, Hard of Hearing, DeafBlind, DeafDisabled and late deafened high school students from the Northeast region hands on, outdoor, volunteer experiences. Students work with CorpsTHAT to complete trail building projects. Outdoor and conservation professionals spotlight the different jobs and careers within the field. Students work together to give back to our public land, the environment and local community by volunteering. They learn new outdoor recreation skills from local Deaf Outdoor enthusiasts.

Unfortunately due to a programing schedule change, we will no longer be able to provide our fall Wilderness Medicine Series: Virtual Workshops. We have issued refunds and sent emails to everyone who has registered so far. We will be rescheduling the series to early 2027, so be sure to be on the look out for that announcement!
