"When I was going through the adoption process with my daughter, I had a lot of fear around this notion that maybe a judge was going to look at me and say, 'You're blind. I'm concerned about you being a parent,'" Deja said.

"[But] we had a female judge, and she said something along the lines of, 'No matter what is going on with people's physical appearance, you are obviously a better mother than she could have ever hoped to have.'"

"We have all heard the jokes. 'What are you, blind?' 'Even a Blind Person can See that!' 'Blind people driving? Absolutely not!' Even in casual conversation, blindness and driving are treated as the ultimate contradiction—the joke that writes itself," said Jordan Moon, first vice president of the National Federation of the Blind of Arizona.

"Now we have choices. We do not have to worry about being turned away because of our service animals. We do not have to make small talk with a driver who keeps asking about our blindness. We do not have to apologize for our busy kids. I am reminded of something we have said many times in the Federation: 'We know who we are, and we will never go back!'"

We have been informed that NFB-NEWSLINE® service in South Dakota will be discontinued effective June 30, 2026. This change is due to a budget decision by the South Dakota State Library and was not a decision we made.

NFB-NEWSLINE® is our audio and Braille news service for people who are blind, low vision, deafblind, and/or otherwise print-disabled.

“Losing NFB-NEWSLINE in South Dakota would be devastating, especially in rural communities where access to information is already limited,” said President of the National Federation of the Blind of South Dakota, Ismael Collazo. “When access to information disappears, independence suffers with it… This is not a luxury. It is a critical accessibility service that gives blind South Dakotans equal access to the information many people take for granted.”

Late Monday afternoon, we were made aware of an upcoming interim final rule from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) that would effectively institute a work requirement for Medicaid recipients. Given that this could affect some of our members, we immediately went to work researching the impact this could have.

After reading through an advance copy of the interim final rule, which is set to be published in the Federal Register on June 3, we can report to you that blind and disabled recipients of Medicaid are defined as “specified excluded individuals,” and will therefore not be affected by this rule change.
