Summer Reads Series: "Educated" by Tara Westover

This #1 NYT Bestseller is a powerful memoir about growing up in an isolated, survivalist family in rural Idaho, and using education as a path toward independence, self-discovery, and a life beyond her upbringing.

While not a traditional DV memoir, "Educated" explores themes many survivors know all too well: isolation, control, and a family system that made it dangerous to leave. Tara's story is a reminder that breaking away from a controlling environment, even one you love, is an act of courage, and that reclaiming your own life is always possible.

As summer nears its end, DV awareness planning and being in commUNITY continue to heat up for our hearts and hands team 💜

Our Annual Strategic Planning Board Meeting got us together to hash out the next year of exciting passion work and we were so elated to have team members, who have amazing babies… one year old and under get together, once again, so our founder could have all the feels of being in space with them! LOL! 😂

The 9th Annual Empowerment Fashion Show for DV Awareness is happening October 23rd and we can't wait to see you there 💜

This night is about so much more than fashion. Our models are survivors and individuals affected by abuse, and they are walking the runway to reclaim their story. Every ticket sold goes directly to LLN's Get Safe Fund, which provides financial assistance to those fleeing abusive situations 💜

📚 DV-Related Summer Reads 📚

This summer, we're highlighting books that deepen our understanding of domestic violence and how it shows up in everyday relationships.

Up next: "Coercive Control: How Men Entrap Women in Personal Life" by Evan Stark.

This groundbreaking book reframes how we think about domestic abuse, moving beyond physical violence to explore the patterns of control, isolation, and manipulation that can trap survivors long before (or even without) a single physical incident. Stark's work has shaped how advocates, courts, and researchers understand coercive control as its own form of abuse.

Understanding these patterns is one of the steps toward recognizing them, and helping others recognize them too. 💜
