EAT & BE MERRY! That was the hope of Avon Rotarians who furnished dinner tonight for the residents of Sheltering Wings. Because of an extensive remodeling project, the SW kitchen is unavailable. So, Rotary stepped up! The reviews? "Those nuggets are the best!" "Is there more barbecue?" "Oh, that chicken & rice is delicious!" Every hungry person was fed to satisfaction with leftovers for lunch tomorrow!

NEW TWIST ON FAMILY MEDICINE! That is what Dr. Elizabeth Wright, wife and mother of 5, is offering through her Sacred Heart Family Medicine direct primary care practice in Brownsburg. With degrees from Purdue, IU Medical School and a family medicine residency at St. Francis, Dr. Wright began her dream of practicing family medicine in a standard practice. After 3 years of working to give each patient the time and care needed in the designated 15 minute office visit, Wright began to think of how she could be more effective. She stayed in regular practice for a total of 13 years and then struck out on her own. Instead of handling 3000 patients, she is capping her Direct Primary Care practice at 450 with office visits up to an hour long. Dr. Wright explains the difference: "This model enables us to provide holistic care with personalized, compassionate attention." For a simple monthly fee, a patient is guaranteed unlimited visits, longer appointments, same day or next day appointments, heavily discounted labs and medications and a personal relationship with the doctor. Patients are encouraged to have health insurance for instances not covered by family care, but the patient's primary care will no longer be inhibited by insurance requirements. For more information about this innovative medical practice that is growing in popularity particularly in rural areas, go to Dr. Wright's web site: www.sacredheartfamilymedicine.com

TOWN UPDATE. The annual traditional Town of Avon update is something our Rotarians always welcome. Since our meeting place is the Avon Town Hall, we are perfectly located for a Town Manager drop by. Ryan Cannon, a town employee since 1999 & Town Manager for 5 years, is always happy to make that happen. Ryan began with a brief overview of some immediate park improvements that will help to engage more people with convenient access. The three projects include expanding access to Burnett Woods with more acreage and convenient parking. The second project is the creating of the "Pickle Patch," 8 pickleball courts where the school tennis courts used to be adjacent to Evergreen elementary. The space will include a small shelter with restrooms and adjacent parking. Finally, the third park expansion is changing Winton Meadows Park to Woodhaven Park and adding 20 acres to the area. Next, Ryan updated us on the progress being made to create a welcoming, pedestrian friendly town center at the Easton Grey project on east US36 across from the Washington Township Park.
The civic center is well on its way to completion with three distinct spaces: a Community Room for use by organizations and civic programs, a center for all Town Offices, and a wing where the Avon Community School Corp. Administration offices will be relocated. Ryan also expressed hope that Rotary Club of Avon would continue to hold its meetings in this new development.
He also went on to discuss the various housing options: a 55 and older neighborhood, a single family home area, and various townhouses, apartments and flats. Once all living areas are complete, there will be 450 to 500 homes. The "Riverwalk District" will be a pedestrian friendly area providing an array of businesses and restaurants selected by the developer. Finally, the town government has committed to hosting 20 all-community events a year to attract area residents to come and fully enjoy this gathering place. Ryan admitted that Avon's lacking a downtown/main street area has always been a challenge to attracting business and new residents. There is confidence that this Easton Grey development will eliminate that challenge.

YOUTH EXCHANGE. Rotary has a worldwide reach, and one program that enhances that reach is Rotary Youth Exchange. District Chair of RYE Jennifer Dale visited our Avon club to give personal testimony about RYE and to offer an in-depth explanation about how it works. Before she was a Rotarian, Jennifer and her husband were asked by Muncie Rotarians to serve as a host family for an inbound student. They were uncertain, even reluctant, but after careful consideration, they agreed. They had such a positive experience that they have hosted several RYE students over the years. Then their youngest daughter declared she wanted to be an outbound exchange student and ended up spending her senior year in Peru. All of these rich experiences lead Jennifer to join Rotary and eventually to step into the District Director of RYE in 2022. When Jennifer speaks about RYE, she speaks from direct experience and sincere belief in the growth experience that it provides for students, for families and for Rotary Club sponsors. To be an inbound or outbound student, the applicant must be 15 to 18 1/2 years old prior to departure, must have a solid academic record, must be interviewed along with their parents about their motivation to participate and must be willing to share in the cost. Jennifer described the students who are most successful in this international experience as those who are outgoing, confident, somewhat independent from their parents and clear-eyed about taking on the challenges of learning a new language and culture. For clubs considering sponsorship, there is approximately an annual cost of $3500 to $5000. The benefits are many: creating future leaders, strengthening community ties, expanding Rotary's reach and impact, promoting service and volunteerism and encouraging global understanding. A RYE student will stay with usually 3 different families during their year-long experience with each family hosting for about 3 1/2 to 4 months. This year in Rotary District 6560, there are 3 inbound students from Brazil, Argentina and Hungary sponsored by Rotary Club of Brownsburg, Carmel and Muncie. All 3 are boys who are very interested in and skilled at soccer. Jennifer emphasized the comprehensive support given by the network of Rotary Districts in the Central States helps to insure a positive, safe experience for all involved.
