With a heavy heart, The SAFE Alliance mourns the passing of one of Austin’s truest champions for children, Cathy McHorse.

Cathy was brilliant, kind, exceptionally humble, and a joy to work alongside. Over her decades of fierce community advocacy, she dedicated her life to ensuring that every young child in Central Texas grew up with equitable access to safe, supportive, and high-quality early childhood environments. Her vision aligned with SAFE's mission to break the cycle of child abuse and to create safe futures.

Cathy brought an infectious smile and radiant warmth to the serious, heavy work of advocacy, leaving an indelible impact on countless families, educators, and community partners across Austin.

We send our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and the vast network of admirers who carry forward her vital work. Rest in power, Cathy. Your legacy lives on in the thousands of children who have a brighter, safer future because of your tireless fight.

Planet SAFE is a place where children can see a parent in a space designed entirely around their safety — with separate entrances and waiting rooms, staggered arrival and departure times, security personnel, and bright, welcoming play spaces that help kids just be kids.

Right now, Planet SAFE faces an uncertain future. Without restored public funding, the program could close this summer.

This Supervised Visitation Awareness Month, we’re asking Austin to pay attention, because this program saves lives and helps break the cycle of abuse.

This week, volunteers from Aerie helped us reorganize our steel storage containers by sorting and moving cribs, mattresses, and other essential supplies to create a more functional and accessible space for the families we serve.

"Over the last weeks, Texans have digested horrific news of murder-suicides in our communities. Our hearts ache for Thy Mitchell and her two young children, whose lives were stolen in a horrific murder-suicide in Houston — and also for the victims and survivors of deadly family violence San Antonio, Lubbock, Pflugerville and Burleson.

Every domestic violence shooting destroys families and sends traumatic ripples through the lives of everyone they knew. It is urgent that policymakers commit to adequately funding vital domestic violence programs and adopting lifesaving gun laws that protect families."

There have been at least 20 murder-suicides in Texas this year, including eight so far in May.

SAFE is hiring Permanent Supportive Housing Advocates.

The PSH Advocate is part of an interdisciplinary team that provides housing, financial assistance, and supportive services to clients who have experienced homelessness. The function of the PSH Advocate is to serve survivors of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking who are also chronically homeless; aging or living with a disability; by helping them access and coordinate essential services to maintain their safety, stabilize their housing, and work towards self-sufficiency.

SAFE's forensic nursing program was just one of four programs that were at-risk of closure this year. It will unfortunately close due to lack of community investment. Three more vital programs still need funding in order to remain operational, and one of those is our Domestic Violence Shelter. Please read our CEO's statement.
