On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, enslaved people in Texas finally learned they were free. Texas serves as the birthplace of Juneteenth and a powerful reminder that rights that aren't enforced and accessible to everyone are just empty words.

Today, we honor the resilience and contributions of Black Texans and Black workers whose labor helped build our communities. As we celebrate Juneteenth, we also reflect on the importance of all workers being treated with respect, protected on the job, and able to thrive in the cities they help build.

Workers Defense members and staff are mourning the loss of longtime community advocate Sylvia Collins and members of the immigrant community who were lost in the recent Dallas apartment fire. Sylvia was a fierce warrior for the immigrant community and had a special place in the hearts of our Dallas members. We extend our deepest condolences to her loved ones and friends. May our beautiful memories help us all in our healing journey. Sylvia, we vow to continue to honor the dead and fight for the living!
