For generations, courageous leaders have helped move our communities forward through compassion, advocacy, and a belief in equity and justice for all.

Over the past 150 years, the YMCA of Greater Seattle has been proud to lift up those leaders and their work in community. This year, we are honored to recognize King County Executive Girmay Zahilay and Attorney and First Lady of King County Joyce Bruce Zahilay with the 2026 Judge Charles V. and Lazelle Johnson Excellence in Social Justice Award at our Celebrating Community Changemakers 150th Anniversary Gala.

As public servants, Executive Zahilay and Attorney Bruce Zahilay have dedicated their careers to expanding opportunity, advancing equity and justice for all, and helping build a more inclusive future for our region. Together, they exemplify the spirit of this award through their commitment to service and their belief that everyone deserves the opportunity to thrive.

In Washington state, 1 in 8 people experience hunger, including 1 in 6 children. That's why we’re expanding the Pantry of Hope to help more neighbors access nutritious food and essential support.

What started at the Kent YMCA has now grown to include pantry locations at the Auburn and Matt Griffin YMCAs, providing free food to community members every Friday.

This summer, the Auburn Valley YMCA is providing FREE healthy meals for all youth ages 1–18 through the Summer Food Service Program. Everyone is welcome!

Free Summer Meals -
What: Free meals and/ or snacks are available at many different locations throughout the summer
Who: Any child that is 18 or under can participate
Where: Various locations, use the Summer Meal finder to find a location near you (will be live and updated later this month). Within our YMCA, meals will be available at Auburn, Matt Griffin, and Dale Turner branches
How: Just show up during the serving time and that’s it. There’s no need to pre-register

Sun Bucks -
What: Sun Bucks, also known as Summer EBT, provides a one-time $120 benefit per eligible child in a household to help families buy groceries.
Who: Children are automatically enrolled if:
They are ages 8-18 AND
Their household receives SNAP or TANF
OR their household income qualifies them for free/ reduced lunch
How: A Sun Bucks/ EBT card will be mailed to each eligible household.
If a family believes that their children may be eligible but are not automatically enrolled, they can also apply online through DSHS. Families can also reach out to DSHS directly with any questions
