Well, when it rains, it pours.
We have another FIP kitty at Hugs Cat Sanctuary. About 30 days ago, we rescued a feral cat named Victoria from a shelter that euthanizes for space. She is the sister of a mama cat who had passed away after losing all of her babies. Victoria was pregnant when we took her in, and we made the difficult decision to do a spay-abort. Afterward, I honestly thought she was grieving the loss of her babies and feeling depressed, so I didn’t think too much of the fact that she wasn’t interested in food, socializing, or interacting with the other cats.
About 10 days ago, I realized something more was going on. We started her on Clavamox for 7 days, hoping it was an infection that would improve with antibiotics. Instead, she continued to decline. Her belly became swollen, she became wobbly on her feet, and it became clear we were dealing with something much more serious.
Victoria appears to have both wet and neurological FIP.
Thankfully, we had GS medication on hand for Buddy, so we started treatment immediately. ( it will take about four or five days for her meds to come in the mail. ) Today is only day two, but we’re already seeing small signs of improvement. She is still very sick, but those little changes give us hope.
Treating a feral cat is never easy. Right now she’s sick enough that she allows me to gently administer her medication without a fight. I have a feeling that as she starts feeling better, her feral attitude will return—and honestly, I can’t wait for that day.
Please keep Victoria in your thoughts. We’ve seen FIP take far too many cats, but we’ve also witnessed incredible recoveries. We’re hoping Victoria will be one of those success stories. ❤️
