We have two more barn cats ready to be adopted and to get to work for you!

Meet Rowan and Moon, who are the newest additions to our "working cats" program, and are ready to be adopted to your farm, homestead, or garage as rodent hunters. These previously free-roaming cats have been spayed/neutered to prevent uncontrolled breeding, and are suited for living their best life as a working cat. And thanks to the support of Friends At Your Metro Animal Shelter and Pasados Spay Station, our barn cats are available at no charge to you!

Not sure if your property is a good fit for a working cat? Our adoption staff will work with you to ensure that the area you live in allows for barn cats and that you are able to provide safe shelter, as well as a dependable source of food and fresh water on your property.

Today is Take Your Cat to Work Day! But what if your cat is "helpful" in all the wrong ways? Or if you're like us and every workday is already full of cats? (Yes, we know how lucky we are!)

Well, guess what? If you meet WA state income guidelines and have a pet cat who needs a snip, you can bring your cat to OUR work, and you don't have to wait for a special day to do it. Your cat can be like Oliver, a young pet kitty who visited us at the beginning of the month from Monroe, WA, for his neuter. This means a happy, healthy life for Oliver, and a happy day for us getting to meet him and make that happen!

Well, when it rains, it pours.

We have another FIP kitty at Hugs Cat Sanctuary. About 30 days ago, we rescued a feral cat named Victoria from a shelter that euthanizes for space. She is the sister of a mama cat who had passed away after losing all of her babies. Victoria was pregnant when we took her in, and we made the difficult decision to do a spay-abort. Afterward, I honestly thought she was grieving the loss of her babies and feeling depressed, so I didn’t think too much of the fact that she wasn’t interested in food, socializing, or interacting with the other cats.

About 10 days ago, I realized something more was going on. We started her on Clavamox for 7 days, hoping it was an infection that would improve with antibiotics. Instead, she continued to decline. Her belly became swollen, she became wobbly on her feet, and it became clear we were dealing with something much more serious.

Victoria appears to have both wet and neurological FIP.

Thankfully, we had GS medication on hand for Buddy, so we started treatment immediately. ( it will take about four or five days for her meds to come in the mail. ) Today is only day two, but we’re already seeing small signs of improvement. She is still very sick, but those little changes give us hope.

Treating a feral cat is never easy. Right now she’s sick enough that she allows me to gently administer her medication without a fight. I have a feeling that as she starts feeling better, her feral attitude will return—and honestly, I can’t wait for that day.

Please keep Victoria in your thoughts. We’ve seen FIP take far too many cats, but we’ve also witnessed incredible recoveries. We’re hoping Victoria will be one of those success stories. ❤️

Day 10 with Buddy FIP dry, he is truly doing amazing and the GS meds for FIP are incredible. He is not jaundiced anymore. He is eating full meals, like five a day, and he is grooming himself. I truly think we’re out of the woods with this guy. I let him out of the cage today for about half an hour to clean his cage and do new litter, etc., and when I went to get him, he ran from me, lol, he was like 'I’m not going back in there.' I said, 'Yes, you are, for a couple more days at least!!!' Anyways, pretty cool.

please share with other Facebook groups or friends that you have that own cats

i need to share something important with fellow cat lovers.

Over the past year, our sanctuary has had three cats diagnosed with advanced FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). In each case, euthanasia was recommended because their prognosis appeared very poor.

Today, two of those cats have completely recovered, and the third is currently improving and responding well to treatment.

FIP can present in several forms:

• Wet FIP – often causes fluid buildup and a swollen abdomen.
• Dry FIP – can affect various organs and is often more difficult to diagnose.
• Neurological FIP – may cause wobbliness, tremors, head bobbing, weakness, dilated pupils, or other neurological symptoms.

Many veterinarians are still unfamiliar with the newer treatment options because, until recently, treatment was difficult to obtain and extremely expensive. A year ago, many people were paying thousands of dollars and often had to obtain medication through specialty sources.

Today, help is much more accessible. The FIP Warriors Facebook group can connect you with experienced treatment administrators, answer questions, help you obtain medication quickly, and even assist with fundraising if finances are a concern.

If your cat has been diagnosed with FIP—or you strongly suspect FIP—don’t give up hope without seeking additional information. Treatment has saved countless cats that would have been considered untreatable just a few years ago.

If treatment is started, consistency is critical. Medication should be given on schedule every day, and sick cats need excellent nutrition and hydration. Many caregivers find that highly palatable wet food helps maintain calorie intake while their cats recover.

If you’re in the Seattle area and find yourself facing an emergency while waiting for medication to arrive, please reach out. I keep an extra bottle on hand for emergencies and may be able to help bridge the gap until treatment can be started.

Please share this post. If it helps even one family save their life

Requests for help are CRUSHING right now. And OFS is FULL. I am not sure that I have experienced such a high volume of emergency requests at the same time... Including a trailer with 20 cats without air conditioning and an eviction with 15 cats locked in a hot garage.... Also, came home to a handwritten note scribbled and taped to our front porch. "Eviction. Need help. Please call me. Cats need help." 😢

How do you explain to people that rescue is not like an expandable Mary Poppings bag... I mean I WISH it was. I truly WISH that we could take in all of these cats from scary situations....

It has been a hard pill to swallow realizing that no one is coming to "save the day" ..... 95% of all the requests for help will probably never find help. That is just how things are these days for animals.

We took in four bengals this week from an eviction. Owner was losing their home and I *figured* Bengal cats would be easy to place into other rescues (I mean look at this six month old baby 😍). But sadly, the cats are all very poorly socialized and not well handled.

One of the younger cats is named "Monster" (if that tells you anything 😢) I cannot even handle Monster ... So the bengals will be at OFS for awhile. They are not candidates for transfer. So much for my grand plan of being able to move cats ....to save more cats 😀

If you have an emergency this week. We are not the rescue to call right now. We do not have a single kennel available. We have over 35+ cats in rescue.... 😢 Please do your best and please do not dump animals. Please try to be responsible.
