During her previous detention in Georgia, Pauline’s experience became part of a congressional investigation into unwanted gynecological procedures at Irwin County Detention Center. Pauline says she went in expecting a routine procedure and later learned that one of her fallopian tubes had been removed.

Now, she is detained again, this time at Stewart Detention Center, separated from her 17-year-old daughter. Last week, advocates, community members, and elected officials came together with one demand: FREE PAULINE.

Pauline Binam has already suffered irreversible harm at the hands of ICE. Now, after eight months detained at Stewart Detention Center, she faces deportation and separation from her U.S. citizen daughter.

This Thursday, advocates, elected officials, and community members will gather outside the Atlanta ICE Field Office to demand Pauline’s immediate release.

Today was an important one at El Refugio. We welcomed Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock and his team to our Hospitality House in Lumpkin.

Their visit matters. They came to Lumpkin, listened to our community, and are taking notice and action around what is happening at Stewart Detention Center.
We’re grateful they showed up, and hopeful about what comes next.

Jeison, a Venezuelan asylum seeker detained at SDC, recorded this video after being physically attacked by a guard. Days later, he HAS YET TO SEE A DOCTOR!

Firsthand testimony like this from inside Stewart is rare, and speaking out comes with risk. Jason is worried there will be repercussions for sharing what happened, but he wants people outside to know what is happening behind these walls.

His message: “We are not criminals. We are not animals. We are seeking asylum.”
