Don’t flip it. Preserve it!

We’re bringing together people who actually know how to do it right.

Unflipping a Mid Century Modern (Dana + Colin) have built a following for thoughtfully restoring their Huntley Hills midcentury home—sharing their process, design decisions, and what it really takes to preserve original character. They’ll be in-store from 1–4 PM walking through their renovation and answering your questions.

Midcentury Atlanta HOMES | Team Bedgood Realtors at Keller Williams Intown Atlanta (William) is Atlanta’s go-to Realtor for authentic midcentury homes & the Co-director of docomomo-ga.( https://www.facebook.com/DocomomoUSGeorgia )

We’re hosting at The Modernist Design Collective and donating 5% of all proceeds (all day) to docomomo-ga (check FB) to support local preservation efforts.

Mark Inn East, today the Ralph David House apartments (277 Moreland Avenue SE, Atlanta), was listed in the National Register of Historic Places this week! Now serving the community as permanent supportive housing for previously unhoused individuals, the history of Mark Inn, Inc. is also community-oriented: one of customer-facing Modern architecture on a family business scale.

Mark Inn, Inc., was a family owned and operated motel business founded in Atlanta in 1961 which grew into a small regional chain by the late 1970s. The first Mark Inn opened on Cleveland Avenue and I-75 South in Atlanta in 1961. Mark Inn East was constructed along then-new I-20 East in 1964. At its peak in the mid- to late 1970s, Mark Inn boasted thirteen locations in the metro-Atlanta area, with an additional Georgia location in Cordele.

The father and son team of Jim A. Shugart and his father James Shugart, Sr., founded the business. Jim Shugart graduated from Georgia Tech in 1952 with a degree in architecture, and his strategy for expansion of the Mark Inn chain was mid-20th century design-centric: to take advantage of interstate-adjacent sites that were relatively small or on difficult terrain, including properties that had been passed up by larger companies. Mark Inns were intentionally positioned adjacent to interstate exit or entrance ramps for maximum visibility, and used dynamic modern signage and architecture not only to stand out from the crowd but to convey to the increasingly speedy public what was on offer—rooms would be modern, clean, and accessible, just like their outward appearance.

Atlanta’s- and much of Georgia’s- mid-20th century commercial growth was dominated and defined by its interstate highways, and the Mark Inn East is a quintessential remnant of the role that family-owned businesses and purposeful architecture played in beginning and shaping that definition.

Many people are familiar with & have heard of I.M. Pei ( famed architect of the glass pyramid at the Louvre in Paris). But did you know Georgia is host to Pei's FIRST commercial commission, The Gulf Oil building in Atlanta? ::

Also notable is a glass & concrete penthouse in Augusta GA, which was built atop the Lamar Building, c.1918. The Lamar building was constructed in Downtown Augusta in 1918 & Pei was commissioned by the building's owner in 1976 to add a futuristic & modern penthouse on top of the Lamar Building in 1976 ::

--Stephanie Cherry-Farmer ::

" The Atlanta Constitution Building has been listed in the Georgia Register of Historic Places, is being nominated to the National Register, and is (finally!) poised for rehabilitation!

Completed in 1949, the building was designed by renowned Atlanta modernists Robert and Company, who also designed such landmarks as the mid-20th century Grady Hospital building (1958) and the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center (1967). The building’s nomination recognizes it as a landmark of the Streamline Moderne style in Atlanta, and statewide. This is the most prominent of the limited examples of the style in the city, also seen in a smaller scale on Atlanta resources such as Briarcliff Shopping Plaza on Ponce de Leon Avenue, and the Varsity on North Avenue.

The building is also significant for its association with Ralph McGill, who made the Atlanta Constitution an unsuspected vehicle for dialogue on race relations and African American civil rights. McGill was named editor-in-chief of the Constitution in 1942. Through his writings on racial justice and equality in the paper, he became known as “the conscience of the South," and would go on to win a Pulitzer Prize in 1959 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964 for his “long-time counsel of racial moderation.”

Docomomo-GA has been advocating for this building since the chapter's inception: for an extensive history, check out our blog post from 2016 here: http://www.docomomo-ga.org/blog/the-atlanta-constitution-building. Included in our 2010 Downtown Atlanta Tour, and 2015-2019 MARTA-techture tours, this gem has long awaited a savior. We always knew that this building would shine again! "

Good morning again all! As William just shared, we have so many ideas we're really excited about bringing to docomomo. For all of us wanting to celebrate all things modern both in Georgia + beyond!

Given that we're ideas people there are no shortage of ideas - tours, parties, lectures, trips, partnerships, other events - but what we would love is to bring some folks on our board who also love *making ideas happen.* Maybe have some experience in events, although not a requirement. If this is you we'd love to meet + see what we could create together! Please reach out!
