Before girls were encouraged to dream about playing professional baseball, one young girl refused to believe she couldn’t.

That girl grew up to become Toni Stone, the first woman to play on an all-male professional baseball team—the Indianapolis Clowns.

🎭 A New Chapter is Coming to the Morton Theatre!

The walls of the historic Morton Theatre are about to tell an even richer story.

This month, installation begins on “The Stage of Memory,” a stunning new mural by internationally acclaimed artist Alex Maksiov. Funded through the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government Public Art Program with generous support from the Athens Downtown Development Authority and the Georgia Power Foundation, the mural will transform the theatre lobby into an immersive celebration of the Morton’s remarkable legacy.

The centerpiece will transport visitors into the theatre’s golden era, featuring legendary performers who graced the Morton stage, with founder Monroe Bowers “Pink” Morton honored in the front row. A companion mural will celebrate the theatre’s evolution into one of the South’s beloved movie houses.

Selected through a blind review process from more than 150 artists nationwide, Maksiov’s design reflects the significance of the Morton Theatre as one of America’s most important historic African American performance venues.

Installation begins in late August and is expected to take 3–4 weeks. We can’t wait to welcome you to experience this exciting new addition to the Morton Theatre.
