Join us for a two-hour sewing workshop with Charles Bannon, a courageous LGBTQIA+ activist and one of the original members of the Gay Liberation Front in the Albany area.

Sunday, September 6th
2-4PM

This hands-on workshop will focus on basic garment repair skills, including hemming a skirt or pair of pants, fixing a ripped seam, and making simple alterations. Participants are encouraged to bring one item of clothing that requires basic repair to use during the workshop. 🧵

Retired from a long and successful career in wardrobe for various theaters in New York City and locally, Bannon will share his extensive sewing skills, as well as stories from his experiences with the Gay Liberation Front in the area, with members of the Q***r and Trans community and our allies. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

We're grateful to the Athens Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD) for their quick response helping ACC, and so many people throughout the community. As a result, the AVFD will be conducting a training exercise TODAY at ACC on Tuesday, August 18 in the late afternoon. 👩‍🚒👨‍🚒

You can expect to see multiple fire trucks, firefighters, and possibly temporary street closures in the area. 🚒

This training exercise provides a valuable opportunity for firefighters to practice basement rescue techniques in our historic building, whose unique features create a realistic training environment that ultimately benefits our entire community. ☺️

For everyone's safety, we ask that community members please do not gather to watch. Please give emergency personnel plenty of space to train safely and effectively. 🚨

Thank you for your understanding, and thank you to the Athens Volunteer Fire Department for all they do! 👏🙏

With an unwavering commitment to bringing people together, Denise McCarroll and Chef Salah Alygad have made Seconds Restaurant much more than a place to eat—they have made it a gathering place at the heart of our community. 👏

A lifelong Greene County resident, Denise began her career in hospitality as a young teenager working alongside her aunt. Decades later, she remains just as committed to the simple act that first drew her to the work: meeting people and making them feel welcome. At Seconds, regulars are greeted by name, newcomers quickly feel like friends, and the restaurant has become a dependable gathering place for residents and visitors alike. Denise has also been a wonderful partner to the Athens Cultural Center, welcoming community meetings, celebrations, performances, and cultural events that bring people together.🍾🌟

Chef Salah's story is one of extraordinary determination and passion. After growing up in Alexandria, Egypt, he came to the United States as a young man without speaking English and built a remarkable culinary career spanning more than four decades, including serving as a banquet chef at the United Nations. Together with Denise, he has established successful restaurants throughout the Hudson Valley, bringing to Seconds an extraordinary depth of culinary experience and a distinctive blend of fine American cuisine and the Mediterranean traditions of his Egyptian roots. 🥘🌟

We are deeply grateful for all that Denise and Salah have given to Athens, and proud to celebrate them as community honorees at Culture Blooms this September. Along with Denise and Salah, ACC will be celebrating Carol Pfister, ACC Treasurer Emerita, as the inaugural recipient of our Perennial Award, honoring her nearly twenty-five years of dedicated service to ACC and her enduring contributions to our community. 🍾

Please join us in celebrating our honorees by placing a personal message in the Gala journal to share your appreciation with our community. For details about the Gala or placing a journal message, visit the link in our bio or our website (deadline extended! Monday, Aug 17). 🌟 https://athensculturalcenter.org/2026-culture-blooms

Join us for a 💥free💥 adult writing workshop Saturday, August 15, 1-2 PM!

Whether you're new to writing or returning to a longtime passion, this welcoming, nonjudgmental workshop offers a space to explore your creativity and discover your own unique voice. ✍️

Through discussion, optional prompts and sharing, participants will experiment with storytelling, reflection, and creative expression in a supportive environment. ☀️

No previous writing experience is necessary—just bring your curiosity and a willingness to put pen to paper. ✍️Whether you've always wanted to write or simply want to see what it's all about, this workshop is for you. 🌈

Taught by D.M. Kamecke, a former magazine editor, newspaper reporter, narrative fiction and creative nonfiction writer, script reader, grants writer, and published poet. Also, former farm hand, factory worker, photographer and, at some point, a librarian. ✍️

This program is for adults 18+ only.

This program is sponsored by the Catskills Association of Publishers and is funded in part by Poets & Writers through public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.

Through decades of selfless service and steadfast care for others, Carol Pfister's generosity, dedication, and quiet leadership have shaped the Athens Cultural Center into the organization it is today. Her influence extends far beyond ACC, leaving an enduring mark on the character, compassion, and spirit of our community. 🌟

For over twenty years, Carol has served as Treasurer of the Athens Cultural Center, offering extraordinary care, wisdom, and dedication through every chapter of our growth. As she recently stepped into the honorary role of Treasurer Emerita, we find ourselves reflecting on the remarkable legacy she leaves—not simply in balanced budgets or careful stewardship, but in the countless opportunities for art, education, and community that her work has made possible. 💫

Carol's service has never been limited to ACC. She has enriched the Village of Athens in immeasurable ways: as a founder of the beloved Athens Victorian Stroll, a champion of the D.R. Evarts Library and Community Action of Greene County, the founder of the Village of Athens Flower Program, a volunteer delivering meals to homebound seniors, a trusted neighbor helping others prepare their taxes, and so much more. She gives her time with grace, her talents with humility, and her heart without hesitation. ✨

It is because of this extraordinary lifetime of service that ACC is proud to introduce the Perennial Award, honoring an individual whose enduring contributions to the arts and cultural life of Athens have helped our community flourish. We can think of no one more deserving to receive this inaugural award than Carol. 🌻

Please join us in celebrating Carol Pfister at our September 10th fundraising gala, Culture Blooms and in thanking her for the profound and lasting difference she has made—not only to the Cultural Center, but to all of Athens. 💐🥳

For details about attending the Culture Blooms Gala or placing a congratulatory message for Carol in the Gala Journal (deadline extended! Monday, Aug 17), visit the link in our bio or our website. ✍️ https://athensculturalcenter.org/2026-culture-blooms
