The DAR’s Memorial Continental Hall in Washington houses America's historic records, relics and treasures. Similarly, the early Hendrick Hudson Chapter wanted in its own chapter house. Benefactor Frances Chester WhiteHartley made that possible when she donated the Robert Jenkins House in Hudson, NY, to the chapter in 1900. A museum with a wonderful collection was formed and the chapter's public library was moved there. Publicly announced house tours are held during the summer. Tours are also available by appointment: contact us through our website, email [email protected], or call (518) 828-9764 to make an appointment.

Memorial Continental Hall, in Washington, DC, is not only a National Historic Landmark but the center of the largest women-owned city block of buildings in the country. It’s just two blocks from the White House, and if you’ve been to DC, you may have been struck by its majesty. Shows like The West Wing have filmed at Memorial Continental Hall, which sometimes stands in for the White House given its similarity and grandeur. Watch to the end to learn what monumental international conference was held there in November 1921. Marian Anderson is given center stage here, too–check out the DAR website link in the first comment to read all about her.

On December 7th, the Hendrick Hudson Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution presented its 2025 Good Citizens awards. Four Columbia County high school seniors were selected as their schools’ DAR Good Citizens for the 2025 school year.

Award winners were Jaidan Blair, Chatham High School; Emma Katherine Schmidt, Germantown Central School District; Pearl Theresa Turner, Hudson High School; and Autumn Doslop-Land, New Lebanon Jr/Sr High School. Pearl Turner was chosen by independent non-DAR judges as the Hendrick Hudson Chapter 2025 Good Citizen.

The DAR Good Citizens program and scholarship contest, created in 1934, encourages and rewards qualities of good citizenship to high school seniors from accredited high schools, both public and private, throughout the United States. This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities. These pillars of good citizenship are defined by the Daughters of the American Revolution as being necessary to be an exceptional citizen. All four students exhibited these qualities.

The Hendrick Hudson Chapter and its Good Citizens Committee Chair Maryanne Lee extend their congratulations to Pearl, and also to all the exceptional runners-up.

Veterans are always top of mind to the members at a DAR chapter, and the Hendrick Hudson Chapter's members are no exception to that rule. This year, for the DAR Day of Service on October 11th, members gathered to begin writing holiday cards to veterans residing in Columbia County facilities. Then, early in December, those cards were distributed to a list of veterans at the Hudson Fireman's Home, Livingston Hills Nursing & Rehabilitation, Ghent Rehabilitation & Nursing, The Grand Rehabilitation & Nursing at Barnwell, and Pine Haven Rehabilitation & Nursing.

There were lots of smiles and wishes for a merry holiday season all around.
