By using currents of rising air for lift, you can fly hundreds of miles over several hours on a good soaring day. Soaring is also known as gliding - one of the oldest forms of flying. People were flying gliders for many years before powered airplanes came about, including the Wright Brothers! In the early days, a glider-ride usually meant a short flight, probably launched from a hilltop. Today we

fly sailplanes: high performance aircraft that can stay aloft for long periods of time, and all with no motor!

Four new Private Pilots at Evergreen Soaring!

Congratulations Alex Koenig, Daniel Taylor Jr., Shawn Horigan, and Eric Wang, who all successfully completed their practical tests with DPE Ed Wi******er on August 20 & 21.

That’s a lot of training flights, tows, thermals, pattern work, rope breaks, searching for that last bit of lift, and a fair number of “coordinated turns, please!” finally paying off.

A big thank you as well to all of the instructors who helped them along the way, and to everyone else who supported their training and helped make these last two days happen.

And thanks to Ed for making the trip and spending two very full days with us.

Well done, gentlemen. Enjoy the new certificates — and the considerably greater freedom to go looking for lift on your own.

Congrats to newly minted CFIG Zach Schrempp (R) who passed his checkride with Designee Eric Haupt (L) at AWO today!

With the “plus” of an actual FAA inspector witnessing Eric’s examination of Zach, the oral exam and flights went like clockwork with the FM’ing handled by Jared.

Annika Pexton has officially become the world’s youngest Certified Flight Instructor!

On her 18th birthday, she passed her Commercial Pilot flight test and followed it up by passing her Certified Flight Instructor-Glider practical test. She completed both milestones during a single marathon day that began at 0630 and concluded at 8:00 in the evening.
