Attention: undergraduate students at Cal Poly Humboldt!

The Schatz Center is hiring a student research intern to support our ongoing offshore wind mooring line entanglement research. This paid, part-time internship is expected to start in October 2026 and continue through the Spring 2027 semester. Eligible applicants must be undergraduate students in good academic standing at Cal Poly Humboldt who are registered for at least 6.0 units in Fall 2026.

This internship offers hands-on experience contributing to an applied research project and working as part of a collaborative research team. A significant portion of the project development has been completed, with important work remaining to support system integration, analysis, documentation, and final reporting. You will contribute to this phase of the project by helping develop technical reports and communication materials, organizing and interpreting research results, and supporting other project activities as needed.

Attention: undergraduate students at Cal Poly Humboldt!

The Schatz Center is hiring a student research intern to join our team to conduct battery siting research. This paid, part-time internship is expected to start in October 2026 and continue through the Spring 2027 semester. Eligible applicants must be undergraduate students in good academic standing at Cal Poly Humboldt who are registered for at least 6.0 units in Fall 2026.

In this position, the student research Intern will support research on social, policy, and environmental factors that shape the siting of BESS facilities in California. The student research intern will contribute to a larger comparative case study of BESS facilities proposed or built in California, Oregon, and Idaho, as well as analysis of the state policies that govern BESS siting and permitting

The Schatz Center and California Sea Grant recently released a new report, Humboldt Bay Shellfish Mariculture Business Survey: Assessing Economic Conditions and Contributions, which provides a comprehensive economic assessment of Humboldt Bay’s shellfish mariculture industry, detailing structural shifts and market trends between 2016 and 2024.

Due to its unique high-health status, Humboldt Bay plays a foundational role in West Coast shellfish aquaculture, producing over half of California’s market-sized shellfish and supplying nearly half of the region's key seed species.

This report evaluates survey data from local businesses and details how shellfish seed produced in Humboldt Bay helps sustain an estimated $155.5 million in annual economic activity and thousands of jobs across the West Coast region.

We are seeking 1–2 Senior Project Engineers to support the development and implementation of clean energy microgrid and distributed energy projects.

This position will be focused on delivering real-world projects that improve energy resilience, support Tribal energy sovereignty, and advance grid decarbonization. You will join a team working on multiple large-scale microgrid projects with Tribal partners in Northern California that integrate renewable energy generation, battery storage, and controls in community-serving energy systems.

The position is expected to start in late August 2026, with flexibility based on candidate availability, and will remain open until filled. The current review deadline is Wednesday, July 29, at 5:00pm Pacific.

Join us on Tuesday, June 23 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm to learn about the new statewide Environmental Monitoring Framework for floating offshore wind development, developed by the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation.

This framework provides a science-based foundation to guide the development of site-specific monitoring plans for species, habitats, and oceanographic processes that may be affected by floating offshore wind in California. It identifies potential environmental impacts from OSW development, proposes relevant monitoring questions, and reviews available and emerging monitoring tools.

In this talk, Ialenti examines the legal, financial, and cultural forces that have influenced the U.S. nuclear waste program, and where Humboldt Bay is situated within the broader national challenge of governing radioactive materials.

Attention: students at Cal Poly Humboldt!

The Schatz Center is supporting the California Public Utilities Commission in hiring up to four undergraduate or graduate students for a Summer 2026 research internship, focused on topics related to energy and environmental policy. This full-time, paid internship is expected to start on or near May 18, 2026 and continue through the end of the summer, with potential for fall continuation at a reduced rate of up to 20 hours per week.

Eligible applicants must be (a) either undergraduate or graduate students, and (b) in good academic standing, and (c) currently registered at Cal Poly Humboldt.

Applications are due by Friday, April 17th, at 11:59 pm (Pacific).
