Part 2: Medicaid Work Requirement

A new federal Medicaid work requirement is coming to Wisconsin, and it may affect some BadgerCare Plus members.

Who: ages 19 to 64, not pregnant, not disabled, and no child under 19 living with you at least 40% of the time
When: new applicants starting Jan 1, 2027, and most current members at renewal beginning March 2027
How to meet it: work, volunteer, join a work program, go to school, or earn $580 or more in one month

Many people are exempt. Not sure? The state’s screening tool takes about 2 minutes. It’s for information only, not an application or a decision.

Try it: dhs.wisconsin.gov/medicaid/work-tool.htm

Next up: Part 3, FoodShare work rules and your to-do list.

Part 1: Public Charge

Public charge rules are changing, and many families are asking what that means for them.

The Department of Homeland Security released the final public charge rule on July 16, 2026, and the new policy took effect Sep 18, 2026. It affects many lawfully present immigrants applying for a green card.

Not sure if it applies to you? The PIF Coalition has a one-page hand-out, “Public Charge: Does This Apply to Me?”, in 9 languages. Please get trusted legal advice before changing any benefits.

Find the hand-out and updates: https://pifcoalition.org/toolkits/public-charge-regulation/

Next up: Part 2, the Medicaid work requirement.
