“Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory or an acceptance of the way things are. It’s a celebration of progress. It’s an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, change is possible, and there is still so much work to do.”
- President Barack Obama

Today we honor Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Let us lament our nation's history of slavery, give thanks for freedom and justice, and pray for an end to racism, racial inequity and oppression everywhere, using the words of ELCA Worship's Juneteenth Observance Prayer of the Day:

"Holy and righteous God, you created us in your image. Grant us grace to contend fearlessly against evil and to make no peace with oppression. Help us, like those of generations before us who resisted the evil of slavery and human bo***ge in any form and any manner of oppression. Help us to use our freedoms to bring justice among people and nations everywhere, to the glory of your Holy name through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen."

On Friday, May 1, we were delighted to once again host the area's premier handbell group, Encore! Handbell Ensemble, at Prince of Peace for a wonderful evening of fabulous music with their Spring concert, "Ringing Wet: Songs Inspired by Water."

The ringers had the audience both singing and clapping along to “Singin’ in the Rain” as they imagined Gene Kelly tapping across the stage, and in stunned silence with their beautifully ethereal "Change Ring Prelude on ‘Divinum Mysterium.’”

Under the direction of Danny Schierl, the talent and musicality of the group is supreme, and we were honored to have them and enjoy their performance.

Thank you to the entire Prince of Peace Soli Deo Gloria Handbell ensemble and family members for helping us make the ringers and attendees feel welcomed! We thank you for helping set up the bell tables and refreshments, greeting at the doors, and helping with cleanup afterwards.

In lieu of tickets, a freewill donation was collected. Thank you to everyone who contributed to help support both the Encore! and PoP Soli Deo Gloria handbell ensembles, and enjoy these photos from the incredible concert!

• Time: 6:30 - 8:30 pm
• Location: Prince of Peace Lutheran Church (ELCA) | 2330 E. Calumet St, Appleton | Narthex & Congregational Life Room (CLR)

Join Wisconsin Interfaith Voter Engagement Campaign (WIVEC) and ESTHER Fox Valley for gatherings leading up to the 4th of July, where neighbors will read and discuss America's most inspiring founding words. It's a once-in-a-generation chance to counter division and build unity together.

Reflect on spiritual and moral questions, while encouraging in civic (not political) engagement.

Build lasting relationships between local leaders and institutions that care about our country’s future, grounded in pride, patriotism, empathy, and unity.

Break bread, discuss texts that are the cornerstone of American democratic history, and build fellowship, illustrating how an array of local institutions can form the basis of America’s positive civic health.

THE FOUR TEXTS (https://faith250.org/the-texts):
• The New Colossus, Emma Lazarus
• What to the Slave is The Fourth of July?, Frederick Douglass
• The Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson
• America The Beautiful, Katharine Lee Bates

Make the 250th anniversary of our country's founding a time of shared civic renewal, rather than division or conflict.

We will meet 2 times discussing two texts at each meeting, starting this coming Tuesday, June 23 and the following Tuesday, June 30 from 6:30-8:30pm. Snacks and beverages will be provided.
