LEAVE IT TO THE TREES TO PROVIDE FALL COLOR. Most of the flowers have lost their color, but the trees at the Scheig center Gardens are are bursting with color! "During spring and summer, abundant chlorophyll makes leaves green while masking other pigments. As daylight fades and temperatures drop, trees stop producing chlorophyll and seal off the leaf base." This allows the other colors to show again. The Scheig Center Gardens, located in Appleton's Veteran's Memorial Park, are the perfect place for a fall stroll. The gardens are free and open daylight hours.

FOR THE PRICE, YOU JUST CAN'T BEAT MARIGOLDS FOR FULL SEASON BLOOMS! Many of the flowers at the Scheig Center Gardens have faded but the marigolds are still going strong and will continue until there is a heavy frost. These full sun flowers can also deter some garden pests when planted near vegetables. Certain varieties are also edible. The gardens, located in Appleton's Veteran's Memorial Park, are free and open daylight hours.

THE DAYS ARE GETTING SHORTER AND COOLER at the Scheig Center Gardens. Color is fading. It's time for grasses to take center stage. Grasses are low-maintenance and drought tolerant. They suffer few pests or diseases and generally require a single cutback in fall or early spring. Check out the Scheig gardens for ideas for your garden. The gardens are free and located in Appleton's Veteran's Memorial Park.

JUST PASSING THROUGH: It's monarch butterfly migration season and the Joe Pye W**d plants vanilla-scented nectar is a butterfly magnet. These hardy plants grow three to seven feet tall and bloom mid to late summer and are deer resistant. Check out all the late summer blooms at the Scheig Center Gardens today. The gardens are free and located in Appleton's Veteran's Memorial Park.

GOLDENROD # 2 - BEES LOVE IT! When other flowers are fading, goldenrod is starting to bloom and is a critical food source for honeybees and native pollinators. "The heavy, nutrient-rich nectar flow helps honeybee colonies build up vital winter honey stores and stimulates the queen to lay more brood for spring... Goldenrod is often blamed for fall allergies, but the actual culprit is wind-pollinated ragweed, which blooms at the exact same time." Consider planting one of the 100 species of goldenrod in your garden.

GOLDENROD KNOWS WHEN THE FIRST FROST IS COMING!
"There is an old farm rule that has been passed down for generations, and it holds up better than you might expect. When goldenrod first blooms, first frost is roughly six weeks out. According to the Farmers' Almanac, this old folk rule is surprisingly accurate across much of the United States... It is what botanists call a photoperiodic plant, meaning it flowers in response to shortening day length rather than temperature." Goldenrod is in full bloom everywhere you look at the Scheig Center Gardens, along with all the other late summer blooms. The gardens, located in Appleton's Veterans Memorial Park, are free and open daylight hours.
