Appleton Compassion Project

Appleton Compassion Project Appleton Compassion Project "The Appleton Compassion Project" is a community art project involving 10,436 Appleton Area School District K-12 art students.

The Trout Museum of Art, in partnership with the Appleton Area School District and Appleton Education Foundation, is proud to announce a project that aspires to teach the practice of compassion through the use of art. Appleton private schools, including Lawrence University, were also participated. In fall 2010, participating students received a 6-inch-by-6-inch art panel to draw or paint their ide

a of compassion. Completed works of art were exhibited at The Trout Museum of Art (Appleton) from May 1-June 30, 2011. The inspiration behind the project came from Richard Davidson, PhD -- a University of Wisconsin-Madison psychology and psychiatry professor and brain investigator who has scientifically found that those who practice compassion have measurably healthier brains, and generally, a happier outlook on life. Davidson's vast research has earned him the most distinguished award for science given by the American Psychological Association -- the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award in 2000; he was also named one of the world's most 100 influential people in 2006 by Time Magazine. Davidson's research shows that compassion can be learned, and should be practiced, as a skill. In my opinion, compassion is helping others in any way. It could be anything from helping someone with their books to going to a country in need. My image represents lots of darkness but in the middle of that there is a light colored path. This represents the little bit of help that there might be for those feeling hopeless. This path leads to a beautiful sunrise that represents a new beginning. I chose this because I thought it applies to a lot of the problems in the world. I made this with mosaic. --Anoymous, 7th grade

Compassion is Life, Compassion is love. Compassion is the only thing thing that keeps the world running. It is the sympathy for others that makes us human in this horrific world we reside in. It is nothing, but yet it is everything. It is inside you and me and it grows with years. Its a shining light that emanates from within.

Cast Iron "Compassion Project" Manhole cover by Rob Neilson

Our human compassion binds us the one to the other - not in pity or patronizingly, but as human beings who have learnt how to turn our common suffering into hope for the future.

My tile represents a hand with plenty of tints of color. The colors are there on the hand to show all the different types of people we have in the world. Hand in hand, the world can change to help those in poverty. In the background, lies a rainbow. The rainbow to me represents unity. It represents unity because rainbows show up after bad storms or bad weather.
