GTB Press Release RE Line 5
The Grand Traverse Band of Otawa and Chippewa Indians (GTBOCI) expresses its profound disappointment and utter condemnation of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy’s (EGLE) reckless decision to issue permits for the Line 5 tunnel project.

This administrative action represents a bad-faith betrayal of the Tribal-State relationship. During consecutive Tribal-State Summits, GTBOCI leadership met face-to-face with Governor Gretchen Whitmer and EGLE staff to explicitly, repeatedly communicate our absolute, non-negotiable opposition to Line 5. By ignoring these formal consultations, the State of Michigan has demonstrated a continuing historical disregard for tribal sovereignty, choosing corporate fossil-fuel interests over its explicit pledges to Indigenous nations; choosing money over people.

In allowing Enbridge, well known for its continued and unabated flouting and ignoring of environmental regulations and laws to build its Line 5 Great Lakes Tunnel Project and petroleum pipeline beneath the Great Lakes is a complete abrogation of her responsibilities and betrayal of her constituency, in her position as the top government official and as the overseer of our Great Lakes. This is an outrage and an unforgivable lapse in her critical priorities as Michigan Governor. This is a decision that stinks of self-interest and of backroom deals above and beyond the normal pay to play that greases the wheels of state government. This is a decision that I hope she'll live to regret and one that hopefully hangs around her neck as she looks to further her career in corporate America, the land of unregulated data centers and oil slicked waters of our beloved Great Lakes.

She is now showing her true colors and who exactly her alliance and allegiance is to, and it's not to the citizens or the natural resources of this Great Lakes state. In one stunning and unexpected decision she has tainted and sullied her entire political career and what remains of her legacy. She is no friend to any of us. She is now in a blatantly ugly and open grab for her own personal and financial interests and nothing more. Governor Whitmer is a menace to this state and its residents and a traitor to her office and whatever code of conduct and ethics she pretends to hold and honor.

This is a monstrous betrayal, the likes of which we have seldom if ever seen in my lifetime by a standing Michigan Governor but one we'll not soon forgot. We should, all of us, stand against this Governor and her office for this disgusting and clearly political decision that undermines every effort in this state to protect our invaluable and precious natural resources and our access to clean water. This is just the beginning. Get your wits about you fellow Michiganders. This fight is just getting started. The lines have clearly been drawn and she is no ally of ours or anyone supporting and protecting clean water in Michigan. She never was. This is the decision of someone who cares not one wit for those who put her in office or who love this state and the Great Lakes. Let there be no mistake here, her decision speaks more clearly than anything as to who she has aligned with and who she truly supports.
She may have found the one issue here that can galvanize and bring disparate groups of people together as one to fight this grave threat to our beloved waters and land we call Michigan.

Well isn't this just a whole ton of bull$hit?

For the first time in history, the EPA just proposed to weaken our strongest federal drinking water protections against toxic "forever chemicals.”

The agency has proposed rolling back enforceable limits on four toxic “forever chemicals,” known as PFAS compounds, in drinking water. PFAS are linked to cancer, weakened immune systems, harm to babies during pregnancy and other developmental risks, even at very low levels.

It is also proposing to eliminate a key safeguard designed to address PFAS mixtures and to delay compliance deadlines until 2031, giving polluters two more years to avoid accountability.

These protections were finalized in 2024 after decades of advocacy. Now they could be dismantled.

176 million Americans have already been drinking PFAS-contaminated water for decades. This would make it worse.

PFAS are called “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down in the environment and build up in your body.

Here's what you can do:
🚰 Filter your tap water. Reverse osmosis and activated carbon are the most effective for removing PFAS.
🔍 Check EWG's Tap Water Database. Enter your zip code to learn what contaminants have been detected in your local water supply.
📢 Contact your elected representatives. Demand that Congress investigate the legality of the EPA’s rollback and act to restore enforceable PFAS limits in federal law.

Ten years ago we fought and fought hard so that all people would be given unfettered access to clean and drinkable water from their faucets, this, in little place called Flint, Michigan. It was a righteous struggle and yielded some very strong and positive results both through our efforts in concert with other groups on the ground through our direct in-home interventions (RRST program), and in concert with and maybe even more impactful on our citizens behalf through our involvement with the Federal courts who granted strong and wide ranging relief for every single Flint resident and family who needed it.

Water should not be a commodity to be bought and sold by and to the highest bidder but that's exactly where we find ourselves today. Please think about this as you play with AI and other such self-indulgent but ultimately luxurious things as those living in many places on this planet struggle for the very right to exist and to have access to clean and drinkable water for themselves, for their families for their children, and animals. Everyone deserves clean water. Every. Single. One of Us.
