Today, UMMAP honors Radiation Therapy Dosimetrists in Michigan Medicine and beyond. Medical Dosimetrist Day is celebrated each year on the third Wednesday of August, to recognize the vital role medical dosimetrists play in the cancer field, honoring all that they do behind the scenes.
A medical dosimetrist is a key component of the radiation oncology team. Once the location of a tumor is identified, the dosimetrist interprets the radiation oncologist’s prescription and creates a specific plan to treat the cancer. Working closely with medical physicists, radiation oncologists, and radiation therapists, they identify the best plan of action to kill cancer cells while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible. They also work to ensure that the patient is in the optimum position for precise radiation delivery.
Although dosimetrists are not the faces patients see, they are a substantial part of behind-the-scenes care in allied health, to ensure every patient is receiving the best possible treatment, designed specifically for them. UMMAP says thank you to all of our Radiation Therapy Dosimetrists!

Today, UMMAP honors the embryologists of the IVF lab. Though much of their work happens out of sight, the impact is literally life-changing. Their precision, passion, and care help turn dreams into families.
Embryologist Day is celebrated around the world on July 25th to honor the birth of Louise Brown, the first baby born through IVF in 1978. Over 12 million babies have since been born thanks to Medically Assisted Reproduction.
Behind every successful IVF pregnancy, there is an embryologist working carefully in the laboratory. Today is about celebrating every embryologist working behind the scenes to make the impossible possible.
UMMAP celebrates our embryologist members, and all those who paved the way for today’s successes. Embryologists at Michigan Medicine have 100% union membership in UMMAP, and we are invested in caring for them as they care for new families.
