Last Saturday, GEO alumni, as well as current organizers, rank-and-file members, and labor allies, met at the Rogel Ballroom to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the ratification of GEO’s first collective bargaining agreement.
The Graduate Employees Organization (GEO) was founded in 1974, making it the oldest continually running graduate student union in the country. Shortly after certification, grad workers went on a month-long strike for a contract in 1975. Since then, GEO members have fought for and won premium-free health insurance, tuition waivers, transgender healthcare, harassment protections, and more.
The speakers for the evening included labor journalist Jane Slaughter, former GEO presidents Jon Curtiss; Rob Gillezeau; Sam Montgomery; and Sandy Silberstein, the president of the union during the 1975 strike. Current GEO President Nico Juarez gave the final remarks.
