Dick’s Sporting Goods is building a new store in Ann Arbor with gas heat, despite attempts from multiple climate advocacy organizations to reach out to them and convince them to build with high efficiency electric heat pumps. Nearly all new development in the city are being built all electric, in accordance with the A2ZERO climate action plan. We already have an air quality problem in Ann Arbor, whether it’s from car and fossil fuel emissions or wildfire smoke in the summer. We can’t have another source of gas burning here. Sign our petition to get their attention!

Tell Dicks Sporting Goods to drop their gas heating plan in their new store! This method of heating is unsafe for our air quality in Ann Arbor. Dick’s Sporting Goods is planning to build a new store in Ann Arbor that ignores the city’s climate action plan to reach carbon neutrality. Ann Arbor’s A2ZERO plan states that natural gas in new construction is incompatible with this goal, and that all new construction should be all-electric, typically with high-efficiency heat pump technology. Yet Dick’s plans to heat this new building with gas.

The great majority of new developments in Ann Arbor are being built all-electric. Why not Dick’s.

Dick’s Sporting Goods is planning to build a new store in Ann Arbor that ignores the city’s climate action plan to reach carbon neutrality. Ann Arbor’s A2ZERO plan explicitly states that fossil fuel, such as natural gas, in new construction is incompatible with this goal, and that all new construction should be all-electric. Yet Dick's plans to heat with gas.

Several local climate advocacy organizations have urged Dick's Sporting Goods to use all-electric heating instead of natural gas, but the company has not responded.

You may ask “We get our electricity from burning fossil fuels, so how can electric heat have lower CO2 emissions than burning gas?” The reality is that less and less of our electricity comes from coal and gas. Currently about 65% of DTE's electricity comes from fossil fuels and 35% is carbon free, coming from renewables and nuclear. Michigan has a mandate for electric utilities to increase their fuel mix to be 50% carbon free by 2030 and 100% by 2040. Installing new gas furnaces now will lock in fossil fuel use for 15-20 years while the grid is getting even cleaner. Also, you can have a greater share of your electricity be fossil free now, by either installing solar, or by buying more renewable power NOW through DTE MIGreenPower.

As we have seen from protests around the country recently, the people have a say, and we are not afraid to make our voice heard! Sign this petition to join in our efforts!

Ann Arbor’s A2ZERO plan explicitly states that fossil fuel, such as natural gas, in new construction is incompatible with this goal, and that all new construction should be all-electric. Yet Dick's plans to heat with gas.

We call on Dick’s Sporting Goods to reconsider their plans for burning gas for heating their new Ann Arbor store and instead opt for a high-efficiency electric heating system. This decision would follow a standard many other developers are already following. Almost all new developments in Ann Arbor are building all-electric in compliance with our carbon neutrality goals.
