Someone asked on the teacher's Ann Arbor Education Association Crisis Team-AAEA Crisis page about Paraeducator pay through the years. Sharing the reply here:
Hello!
Thanks so much for asking! We just changed leadership this summer and don’t have prior years’ salaries handy. Here’s what we can share based on looking at contracts and knowing the names on the expired MOA that shifted pay groups for our TA’s working in self-contained and with 1:1 students.
Based on October 2024 data, our average salary for our 287 full-time AAEA-P is $26,386. The vast majority of teaching assistants and preschool paraeducators fall in our lowest pay group. These 209 individuals average a salary of $24,654.
From February 2019 to Feb 2023, the starting wage stayed the same. Salary only increased for folks with 5 years and more.
We haven’t dug into it thoroughly and somehow we got the other two furloughed days back on our calendar.
Here’s what we am certain of:
2015-16
4 Furlough Days. Wage Freeze. Step Freeze. 1 time 1% off-schedule "bonus"
2016-17
1% increase. "Full Step Advancement applied to half of the year"
2017-18
1.68% increase. Elimination of 2 furlough days.
Starting pay G3: $14.29, G2: $15.37, G1: $17.56
2018-19
1.5% on schedule increase to Step 5 only. Later (Feb 2019) 0.5% increase to all steps
Starting pay G3: $14.36, G2: $15.45, G1: $17.65
2019-20
Wage freeze. Step freeze. 1 time off-schedule bonus of $484
Starting pay G3: $14.36, G2: $15.45, G1: $17.65
2020-21
1/2 step advancement. 2% added to Steps 5, L1, L2
Starting pay G3: $14.36, G2: $15.45, G1: $17.65
2021-22
1/2 step advancement. 2% added to Steps 5, L1, L2
Starting pay G3: $14.36, G2: $15.45, G1: $17.65
Self-contained TA’s given $1500 lump sum (Dec 2021)
2022-23
1 step advancement. New values. 14.90% increase to Group 3. 10.35% increase to Groups 1 & 2.
Starting pay G3: $16.50, G2: $17.05, G1: $19.25
Self-contained TA’s given $1500 lump sum again (Nov 2022)
2023-24
1 Step advancement. 2% to whole table.
Starting pay G3: $16.83, G2: $17.39, G1: $19.64
Nov. 2023 the district created an MOA bumping TA’s in self-contained classrooms as well as TA’s who are 1:1’s from our lowest pay group into our highest. From 16.83 to 19.64 an hour through March 2024.
Spring: District let MOA expire and TA’s reverted back to the lowest pay group, an approximately $5,000 pay decrease. This affected approximately 1/3 of our full time AAEA-P members. Because the change happened after the initial expiration date, the difference in wages for remaining months was taken retroactively from paychecks leaving many starting summer with a paycheck of around $100. When they did so, TA’s in self-contained and 1:1 positions dropped back to the lower level of pay, and subsequently most left the district.
2024-25
1 step advancement. 1.5% to salary table. Additional 0.5% added to each longevity.
Starting pay G3: $17.08, G2: $17.65, G1: $19.93
2025-26
October: We start the year short 47 teaching assistant positions.
March: We are short 44 teaching assistant positions.
