! AYEA overseas! An amazing group of AYEA teens represented the United States at the 2005 Youth Eco Forum Conference in Akureyri, Iceland. They got to explore the beautiful land and discuss climate change and renewable energy. So fun!

Thank you Lily! 🌄🌊🐟 Last week was the final week of work for our amazing Youth Leadership Intern, Lily! We are so appreciative of her hard work this summer. Lily took the lead on a much needed refresh of the AYEA chapter toolkit, helped with outreach at community events, and was an invaluable trainer for our summer workshop series - among many other things! This fall Lily will continue her studies in Peace and Conflict at Colgate University. We wish her well and can't wait to see what she does next!

If you are a post-high school/college-age youth looking for a fun job next summer (AYEA alums, we're looking at you!!), keep a look out in January for when applications open for next year!

! In 2005, Jimmy Carter came to Anchorage in celebration of ANILCA's (the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act) 25th anniversary. Our AYEA teens were lucky enough to meet and speak with the former president at this celebratory luncheon!

AYEA loved being able to meet teens from communities on the Kenai Peninsula this past month! Our first stop was in Port Graham with their summer Youth to Work program, and then Peterson Bay with the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies! Our summer workshop series continued with a focus on storytelling and how to use your voice, whether it’s in testifying for something you care about (like protecting your fish!) or using art to take action. We are honored to hear your stories and know you have powerful voices that we encourage you to share!

! In 2004, AYEA went international! Our Alaska teens were the only United States delegates to attend the International Youth Eco Forum in Hokkaido, Japan. What a wonderful time!

! AYEA teens have had many incredible opportunities over the years to advocate on the ground in Washington, D.C. for issues that are important to Alaskans. In 2018, they took to the Capitol to oppose Bristol Bay mining and Pebble Mine, and spoke with Senator Murkowski and other legislators about the projects.

! From 2010-2012, teens from around the state took on a campaign to advocate for wild salmon protections. Teens in Seldovia, Anchorage, Dillingham, Fairbanks, Igiugig and Yakutat all took action on Wild Salmon Day in 2011, they spoke directly with legislators in Washington, D.C., and in 2012 they gave public testimony at the EPA hearing on Bristol Bay mining in Anchorage. Youth voices have been a critical part of the decades-long movement to protect wild salmon in Alaska.

! AYEA teens have taken action at two Powershift Convergences with other youth climate activists in Washington, D.C. In 2007, teens testified in the Capitol, urging legislators to take immediate action on climate change. In 2011, teens participated again, learning about grassroots organizing skills and directly advocating in D.C. It is so incredible to see how driven Alaskan youth are to act on climate change, and how their advocacy has been going on for decades!

! This summer we're going through our photo archive of 28 years of AYEA photos! Check back each week for the rest of the summer as we post some oldies but goodies. :)

This week we're looking back at some of the incredible AYEA chapters that teens have created and led across Alaska. It's amazing to see some of the chapter events from years passed, with beach cleanups in Yakutat and Seward, garden projects in Fairbanks and Homer, and such amazing and motivated youth organizing together all around the state! Maybe you recognize yourself or another AYEA alum?? We'd love to hear any stories you have about these pics!

AYEA 4 Life!!! ❤
Over the weekend several AYEA alumni (and past/present mentors!) were part of a Movement Leadership & Training Camp hosted by Fireweed Collective AK and the Fairbanks Climate Action Coalition. Participants reflected about what it means to step into leadership in our movements and honed their skills as trainers. AYEA alumni of all generations are leading the way towards the beautiful future we envision for our communities. It's hard work, but doing it together makes it worth it. ❤
