While there will not be another Northern Lights & Sirens Camp until 2027, for those that are of age and interested The Anchorage Fire Department is hiring for a second new hire firefighter academy in the fall of 2026!!!

The Anchorage Fire Department is accepting applications for a *SECOND* 2026 Academy and the 2027 Academy. The time to apply is now. At the end of the day on May 15, 2026, the opportunity ends.
“Currently there are about 70 retirement-eligible firefighters in AFD’s ranks. Our department is stacked with members reaching their 20, 25, even 30 + year milestone,” said Chief Douglas Schrage. “To maintain a healthy firefighter workforce, we need to find quality applicants to rise and fill their boots. By adding in an extra 2026 academy— and using the applicant pool to hire for the following planned academy— we can stay ahead of the retirements potentially coming along in the next few years.”

There are some minimum requirements: High School Diploma, GED, or Equivalent, must be at least 18 years old (by time of hire), and have a valid State of Alaska Driver's license with acceptable driving record by time of hire.
Our academy will teach the skills necessary for a successful career as an Anchorage Firefighter.
