Phil is celebrating his fifth year of club membership. He has been very active in many of our service projects and activities including: Food at First, MICA food pick up, Meals for Haiti, Highway clean up, Little Free Library stewardship, ISU dining service, Camp Hertko Hollow, Brookside Park garden, and Senior Variety Show.
Phil is a past president of our club, and he continues his strong leadership as a current board member. He states his reason for belonging to this club is the great opportunity for community service, especially efforts that impact children, young adults, and families. In addition, through the weekly meetings, Phil enjoys learning about a wide variety of topics presented by members and local experts. Thank you, Phil. It's been a pleasure serving the community with you!

Our club proudly acknowledged its 60 years with a night of festivities and camaraderie with community friends and fellow Kiwanians at the Green Hills Community Room on September 22, 2026. Thank you, Event Chair, Gerri Bugg; historian Dan Franklin; and Master of Ceremonies Leo Timms. The evening began with a reading of the Proclamation at City Hall and ended with a slide show of the history and current club happenings. Also recognized were: the Kiwanian of the Year, Phil Martin; the installation of new officers; and the eight Legion of Honor members. Beloved charter member, John Greve, received special recognition as our “Iron Horse” and received a token signed baseball for his teamwork and dedication to the club. Our club has an extensive track record of community projects, and a unique roster of amazing members who have
truly enjoyed serving together through the years.

Leo Timms and Phil Martin (pictured) along with fellow Kiwanian Dan Franklin manned the popcorn machine at Camp Hertko Hollow following its June session. This is a local camp for children and their families who are learning to live with diabetes. Our club has been involved with Camp Hertko Hollow for over 50 years in the areas of scholarships, bus transportation and popcorn popping.

Raising Readers sponsored a Read Across Story County on September 11. Club members Marion, Dale, and Marilyn were part of this effort which involved many elementary schools across the county. Raising Readers has been a signature project for our club for several years including the projects of funding, building and manning Little Free Libraries across the Story County.

Wow! That is 340 Years of service! Imagine the difference just these eight men have made in children’s lives in our community through the years. We are very proud to serve alongside these dedicated members and club leaders.

Senior Variety Show (SVS) is a community fundraiser for local senior projects and programs, raising nearly a quarter of a million dollars since 1995. Ames Town and Country has supported SVS since 1997; first through ushering, then as a sponsor, and most recently as performers on stage. This year the Town and Country presented an act about the worthiness of “Kids,” a perfect way to spread the Kiwanis mission and celebrate our 60th year at the same time! The performers were Randy, Sue, Marilyn, Leo, Dan, Dale, Gerri, and Jack.

At the recent Ames High Pops Concert Marion Kresse of our Kiwanis club acknowledged three Ames High senior musicians with awards in the areas of orchestra- (Laura Chen), Band- (Evan Buller), and choir- (Nathan Mittman). These awards are a long-standing tradition, presented by Ames Town and Country Kiwanis.

For 16 years, our club has managed the large flower bed beside the Brookside shelter. Each May we gather there for a working breakfast meeting. Thank you Holub's for donating the plants each year.

Who wouldn't want to belong to this fun-loving club...whose members are talented, giving, and enjoy great camaraderie in serving the community together! In the past 20 years, 330 beautiful wreaths have been created; thank you, Paul, Gerri, Stephanie, and Jack! The total amount raised is over $45,000, including $3,300 from this year's 10 wreaths. (Thank you, generous members, and clever Auctioneer Leo!) This money strengthens our club's Foundation and is used for special community projects that come up throughout the year.
