Allen Quilters’ Guild presented Marques Miles, United States Air Force his Quilt of Valor on Saturday, May 2nd in The Colony. Elaine R. and Carol B. presented him his quilt. Anne Mix and his wife wrapped him in his quilt. Anne pieced and bound the quilt. It was quilted by Tom DeMoss at Ready Set Quilt in Plano.

Marques served from 2001-2020 during Operation Enduring Freedom. He was stationed in Germany, Kuwait, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Texas, and Virginia. He was a member of the 138th Fighter Wing. He received the Combat Medal of Honor.

Carol B, Betty M and Elaine R, members of the Allen Quilters Guild awarded Corp 1st Class Merle C. United States Marine Corp, his Quilt of Valor on his 100th Birthday. His son and daughter helped wrap him in his quilt. Present were 180 plus friends of his to help celebrate.

His quilt reflects our nations 250 Anniversary. It was pieced by Elaine R. and quilted by Debra MR.

Allen Quilters Guild held a Quilt of Valor Sew Day at the Allen Senior Recreation Center in Allen on Thursday, April 23 from 10:00-4:00. Members of the guild, Senior Center Quilters and new friends came and sewed blocks together to make Quilts of Valor. These quilts are awarded throughout the year to area service members and veterans. Thanks to all who volunteered their time today for our veterans. You can nominate someone on the Quilt of Valor website at www.qovf.org. Nominate someone today!

Also, thank you Laurie Thode with Allen Senior Recreation Center for hosting our event.

Betty Matthew, a member of our guild, was awarded the DAR Mary Shirley McGuire award for her Community Service at their monthly meeting Thursday, April 16th. Her award was presented by Carol Rimka. Elaine Rice read her letter of recommendation to receive this award. Betty also presented a program on the History of Quilts. Displayed were many of Betty’s quilts. She is involved in many community projects to others including making over 100 stockings to send overseas to our service men and woman at Christmas time, making pillow cases for Lone Star Santa’s, placemats for Meals on Wheels, quilts for Quilts of Valor, pocket crosses for those needing comfort, her church activities and many others. She is a proud American that supports our veterans. Her family includes active and retired veterans. Thank you, Betty, for all your many hours to help others.

Allen Quilters Guild awarded Sgt Lonny V his Quilt of Valor at the VFW Group Meeting at The Allen Senior Center. He served in the United States Air Force and was stationed in Vietnam. His wife and many comrades were present to witness this honor.

Quilt Guild members Carol B, Betty M, Dot F and Elaine R were present to wrap Lonny in his quilt. The quilt was pieced by The Allen Senior Quilters, quilted by Debra Malone-Reeve and bound by Paula Pzomp.

Allen Quilters’ Guild presented Staff Sgt Joe Fitzsimmon his Quilt of Valor for his service in the US Air Force during 2 tours of duty to Vietnam. Joe is currently battling pneumonia and asked for your prayers. He cried as his quilt was placed over him in his hospital bed. His best friend was there when he received his quilt. His quilt was made by Glenna Blabant and quilted by Laura Coble.
