For 250 years, America has been defined by service, resilience, community, and a lasting connection to the outdoors.

On the Army’s 251st Birthday, we’re proud to continue that legacy through Freedom Found on the Water with Heroes on the Water.

This summer, we’re sharing stories of veterans, active-duty military, and first responders finding connection, purpose, and healing through time on the water, alongside the partners who help make those experiences possible.

From Malone Auto Racks powder-coated green kayak trailer to Tackle Warehouse ammo green reel, every detail reflects the strength and spirit of those who serve. We can't help but see Army green!

Freedom is something you experience. And often, it’s found on the water.

What does the flag mean? Ask ten people and you'll get ten different answers.
For some, it's a symbol of freedom. For others, sacrifice. For many who have served in the military or as first responders, it's tied to experiences, memories, and people they'll never forget. And the American flag has been present in moments of pride, moments of loss, and moments that changed lives forever.

That's why Flag Day isn't simply about recognizing a symbol. It's about reflecting on the values and commitments that symbol represents, and the people who have dedicated themselves to serving under it.

Today, we honor all those who have worn the uniform, answered the call, and continue to serve their communities long after their shifts or service have ended.

And as we display our nation's flag, it's also a good opportunity to refresh our understanding of proper flag etiquette and traditions.

251 years ago today, ordinary people stepped forward and accepted an extraordinary responsibility: to stand for something bigger than themselves.

Since then, generations of soldiers have carried that legacy forward.

The Army's birthday is often celebrated through history, tradition, and milestones. But at its heart, it's really about people.

People who missed birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. People who carried heavy packs, heavier responsibilities, and the expectation that others were counting on them.
People who lived everyday understanding that service isn't just a moment, it's a mindset.

At Heroes on the Water, we're privileged to spend time with many Army Veterans whose service continues long after they leave active duty. Their leadership, resilience, and commitment to others remain part of who they are.

Happy Birthday, U.S. Army.

This month, we launched our newest Therapeutic Program in partnership with the Phoenix VA - and what a great way to begin!

Our first participants spent the day kayak fishing, sharing stories, and enjoying the benefits of time outdoors together.

We’re excited to bring this program to veterans in the Phoenix area and grateful to everyone who helped make this launch possible.

What does it mean to serve when your service is not always recognized?

In a new op-ed for TheGrio, Melissa Harris reflects on her experience as a woman veteran and the ongoing challenge of visibility in military service.

Her piece explores a reality many women veterans share: despite serving across every branch of the U.S. military, their contributions are still too often questioned, overlooked, or misunderstood.

It’s a timely reminder that recognition is not automatic — and that ensuring all veterans are seen remains an ongoing responsibility. Read her full op-ed here:

Melissa Harris shares how military service shaped her life and why veteran support spaces remain deeply important.

For years, Melissa Harris viewed her military service as something private rather than something to celebrate. Her story reflects the experiences of many women veterans.

This Women Veterans Day, we honor the women who have served our country and continue to strengthen their communities through leadership, resilience, and service.

Thank you to all women veterans.

We often share the number of events hosted, participants served, and volunteers engaged.
Those numbers matter. But they only tell part of the story.

What doesn't always show up in the data are the relationships that continue after an event ends. The volunteers who return year after year. The local chapters that become part of the fabric of their communities. The supporters who invest not because they're asked, but because they believe in the mission.

Heroes on the Water supports veterans, active-duty military members, and first responders through kayak fishing and outdoor recreation that is backed by science and proven in our outcomes.

Some outcomes are easy to count. Others are impossible to ignore.

When was the last time you weren't multitasking?
No notifications. No endless scrolling. No next task already competing for your attention.
Just one thing at a time.

For many of us, that's become surprisingly rare.
Life moves fast. Responsibilities pile up. The noise never seems to stop.

For those who have served in the military or as first responders, that pace can feel even more familiar. Always focused on what's next. Always prepared for what's coming.

But now more than ever, there's value in slowing down long enough to simply be where you are, enjoy a conversation, appreciate a quiet moment, and spend time with people who understand your experiences.

Sometimes the most meaningful thing we can do is give ourselves permission to be present.

Every Heroes on the Water event starts with people willing to step up and serve.

Today, we're grateful for the volunteers who make this mission possible in communities across the country.

Whether you've volunteered once or a hundred times, thank you for helping create opportunities for veterans, active-duty military members, first responders, and their families.

If you've volunteered with Heroes on the Water, tell us where and how long you've been involved. We'd love to recognize our volunteer community in the comments.
