Aberdeen Police Department

The Aberdeen Police Department recently received a grant of $53,912.00 through the Attorney General's Drug Control Fund to cover the cost of a turret for the MRAP we received through the 10-33 program last year.

Some confusion has arisen from recent media reports regarding the type of turret we have procured. There is no gun (.50 caliber, 120 mm, or otherwise) affixed to the turret. The turret simply provides ballistic protection for officers when they need to access the roof hatch for visibility.

We'd like to thank the Attorney General's Office for making it possible for us to obtain this important safety resource.

We've attached a sample picture of a turret similar to the one we will be receiving.

Another Highlight from a Aberdeen Citizen:
"I’m voting NO and I urge others vote NO. I rarely tell people how to vote, but on this issue I cannot remain silent. I have spent a lot of time over the past 2 weeks looking at the issues. The group pushing for the new facility generally keeps saying to trust them as they have done the research. From what I’ve seen the data they are using for usage is outdated and not from communities similar to ours. The research I have found shows library use is on a gradual decline both in this state and nationally. I tried to research the foundation to see how they were formed and hoping to learn the mission of the group. I just find it strange that the foundation wants to spend money on a facility. Foundations typically spend their money on improving services, not facilities. I found the foundation is actually delinquent and that library staff may be overseeing the foundation from the library offices. Not very professional and our city council should investigate why the library office is the official site for this foundation. I noticed someone asked the library staff on their page why they are not open on Sundays like other bigger city libraries. The answer being they are operating on a 20 year old decision and lack of funding. My first response to dealing with lack of space at the library would be to expand the hours of operations to reduce overcrowding, before even looking at a larger facility. If the city library does not have the budget to operate 7 days a week, how can people justify the money to build a new facility? I was involved in building a new church. Fund Raising is a major challenge and from the comments I have seen and heard, the foundation will struggle to raise money. The foundation should have been seeking pledges for the last several years. The Boys & Girls Club and Safe Harbor have been raising funds for 2 years and they are still working to try to get to their goals. The argument that $1.7 mil has been already spent and would be wasted if the vote is no, is ridicules. I do not understand why land was purchased or why we paid for such complete architectural drawings knowing that there was opposition to the location and new facility. They should have pursued on option to purchase on the property and also just pursued preliminary architectural drawings to provide a floor plan, exterior concept, and site layout so that a good cost estimate could be completed. This is just another signal to me that this project has been managed poorly."

NWS STATEMENT aka VOTE NO Monday!

A STORM SYSTEM IS EXPECTED TO IMPACT THE REGION TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. ALTHOUGH THE TRACK AND TIMING OF THIS SYSTEM IS STILL UNCERTAIN... HAZARDOUS WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE. THIS INCLUDES THE CHANCE FOR FOG AND FREEZING DRIZZLE TUESDAY MORNING... AND FOR HEAVY SNOWFALL LATER TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY. GUSTY NORTHWEST WINDS ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO DEVELOP WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON POSSIBLY RESULTING IN BLOWING OR DRIFTING SNOW. MANY OF THE DETAILS STILL REMAIN UNCLEAR... INCLUDING SNOW AMOUNTS AND THE LOCATION OF THE HEAVIEST SNOW. STAY TUNED TO THE LATEST FORECASTS AND BE PREPARED FOR HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS.

Just a quick Question here. Have you Voted No yet?

Another Highlighted Posted:

"Look how council members are trying to mislead people. They are getting very desperate and apparanty will say anything.
Rux is saying the city had to spend $6.8 mill for a new police station so the PD could move out of city hall. He thinks that 6.8 mill cost should be added to the 3 mill remodel cost of city hall. Rux fails to point out the new PD building was overbuilt to create 1 law enforcement building to allow other law enforcement agencise to occupy the same building. He also forgot to mention the large garage built with the PD building that no other law enforcement agency in this area has. Oh, we still have no takers on other law agencise moving in to the new PD building.
The only way to stop this is to Vote NO!"

12/11/2015

Very Valid Points!

12/11/2015

A great public voice:

"I have been attending library meetings since 2009. In those seven years, the library board has spent an average of $11,094.90 per year on general building repair and maintenance. Additional library repairs using the second penny tax were roof repair ($31,486.40, 2010), drain tile ($46,694.81, 2011), which apparently did not work properly so modifications were made in 2012 for an additional $24,624.47.
According to the city engineer, the library basement is dry. We’ve been meeting in the basement with architects and never once has there been an odor or dampness. Two rooms have hanging insulation with appears to have been wet; it and surrounding structure haven’t been replaced.
On Oct. 19, 2009, a letter was sent to the city council about a work session to discuss a library task force report on a 40,000 square foot building at $4,800,000. Here it is, 2015, and the building plans have decreased to 28,000 square feet, at the increased price of $8 million. Their figures, not mine, indicate an amount closer to $12 million.
The task force was offered a lot west of K.O. Lee. The land had never been built on, no demolishing would be needed. It had wide access roads and was along a bike trail. However, in the minds of the library board, foundation and some city councilors, the cramped lot close to downtown was better. The price of the two lots, downtown ($700,000) for land, ($47,000) church clean up, ($56,250) for the Fry house, ($7,380) demolition, ($7,930) for soil assessment, loss of property tax ($5,463) and broker’s fee of ($7,420) for a total of $831,433. The price of the Lee property for an additional 12,500 square feet was $292,500. That’s $538,943 less than downtown property.
Site Related Criteria as quoted from the Committees Master Plan: "Site costs include any site applicable costs including the acquisition of land, relocation costs, unusual site development costs, demolitions, remodeling and construction.”
Respect our tax dollars. Please vote "no" on the library bond."

Highlighting a Post from AJ:

"Think of all the buildings in Aberdeen that have been remodeled or re-purposed. This is just some of the buildings I can remember that co-workers came up with today.

-Former Dakota Midland Hospital in now a christan school.

-NSU has extensively remodeled several dorm buildings from small dorm rooms into suite style dorms.

-Aberdeen American News building, a building of the same age as library, was recently remodeled.

-Eide Bailey office building was a 4 or 5 bay Firestone Tire store.
-Avera St. Lukes contineously remodels and renovotes it's complex to meet every changing heathcare needs.

Going back afew years the Kessler family turned an old lumber yard into a large entertainment complex called The Lumber Company.

Avera's former education center east of Kesslers was also a old lumber yard. -Several old train depots have been converted to uses such as law offices and credit unions.

-Several car washes have been repurposed into uses such as auto repair shops, retail sales, casinos and food shops.

-At the corner of 2nd ave se & Main is a 2 story white building that was a bank, beauty school and fitness center.

The county remodeled the Dakota Heritage Library building. I think this was a bank and office building at one time.

Ward hotel was coverted several floors from hotel rooms to condos. -Schwan Financial building was a funeral home.

The Bantz, Gosch & Cremer law office building was originally a church. -The Roosevelt building at 3rd kline was converted from a school to residential apartments.

The apartment building at the corner of 5th and lincoln was a medical clinic. So why is it that so many owners remodel their buildings but supposedly we can not remodel our library?

Are all these people doing remodeling making poor decision? If it was not cost effective to remodel, then we would not have a historic downtown business district as all those downtown old buildings would have been leveled years ago."

A Quote form The Fine Folks at The Alexander Mitchell Public Library Foundation

" If you have negative comments, post them elsewhere as they will not appear here."

Yet they have posted negative posts not only on our page but on there page as well.

Just some things to think about.

So we have been taking pictures of the current library lot, since its said the lot is always full. People on the pro side said check it out during story time and around 3 o'clock. So we did just that along with a couple other stops for good measure!
Lot is not even half full.

Ask almost anyone in Aberdeen the following:

Do you enjoy our water?
Do you enjoy our wonderful pothole system?
Do you enjoy our beautiful creek?
Do you enjoy our snowplowing efforts?
Do you enjoy our lack of transportation?
Do you enjoy waiting on mosquito spraying until its out of control?
Do you really think "Life is Good In Aberdeen"?

Most will agree, 12 Million Dollars for a 24K Gold Library is way to much! Money could be spent better elsewhere.

Get out and Vote No Now for Responsible Tax Spending.

Taking some posts from The foundations page and explaining them. I will try to break them up so it does not clog up your newsfeed and so its not such a long post.

Bonds: $3 million = Well the foundation “Pledged the amount of 2 Million dollars” If they foundation is all about access for all and they want there money back, well that kind of tell us something.

Architect fees: $200,000 to $400,000- Correct

Interest: $800,000 to $1 million over twenty years. Same as the City Hall Bonds of $3.2 mill Interest-= Check Bonds statement above.

Pay back Foundation: $400,000 - for what? If the foundation wants an updated library so bad, what is the need to give it back. Seems pretty sad to me they would play that card!

Money already spent for new Library: $1.7 million.
Sell the land for low cost apartments something needed in Aberdeen. Keep the land for feature Aberdeen use.

Total project cost for remodel: $6.1 million- More like 2.5 Million with the help of the foundation.

12/10/2015

More people judge Aberdeen by the Moccasin Creek more then our current library.

Minimal work has been done to combat Flooding, Smell, and Standing Green water.

Budget more towards the comfort and looks of Aberdeen!

Don't Build a 12 Million Dollar 24K Gold Library!
Remodel what we have for millions less!

Moccasin Creek = Mosquito Breeding Ground!

The city has only budgeted small amount of money to be put towards the creek in next years budget.

I'd like to highlight a comment that was made in another post.

"Just because money has not been spent wisely in the past does not mean we should keep spending. Stand up and fight all this wasteful spending."

Truer words have never been spoken!

12/09/2015

REMEMBER WHEN PEOPLE SAID WE NEED A NEW HIGH SCHOOL? People said old buildings were falling apart. Turns out the after the new high school was built this campus was turned in to beautiful apartments, an art gallery, a space that was a library, city offices, class rooms, etc.

If a wonderful campus such as Old CHS can be used for all this, the current library can certainly be fixed!

Aberdeen, SD - Official Website - Public Works

Some people are calling this Library project a Public Works Project listing Wikipedia as a source.

Let us set the record straight:
"The Public Works Department provides all engineering design and inspections, as well as operation and maintenance of all water main, sewer main, storm sewer, solid waste collection, contracted recycling, water treatment, storage and metering, sewage collection, and treatment services. "

according to:

http://www.aberdeen.sd.us/index.aspx?nid=68

They also posted the following:
"If you'd like to be taken seriously, a good start would be to make arguments that you don't have to append the "includes interest" footnote to, and knock it off with the "24-karat gold library" remarks. "

Responce: We note "Includes Interest" Because many people are saying 12 Million Dollars is note the true price!

24 Karat Gold Remars? Seen this in the paper and thought thats what it really is! For 12 Million Dollars i sure hope its not just gold plated but PURE SOLID 24 KARAT GOLD!

Some comments were also made about the water issues at the current library. Again look at City Hall! The issues have been fixed and where much more complex than the library! With the drainage project on Kline St. there should be no issues!

So here is another post from the foundations page. We all know what happens when a post that the foundation does not agree with appears on there page.... It's not there for long! So thats why we are sharing it here!

"Here's the problem with the new library idea that many people are apposed to that I have spoken with. You are duplicating services and facilities that are already handled by the ARCC. That does nothing but cost the taxpayers money, just because everyone wants to be king of their own private little empire."

"Of course it's easy to find lots of content online to justify a cause"
Well Alexander Mitchel Public Library Foundation... You did just that!!!

The foundation recently linked to a page where a city spent the same amount per square foot of the propesed Aberdeen Library.

This library opened in 2008 according to the libraries own site.
NOT 2012 as stated by The foundations page. Further more 2012 is not listed anyplace on the page supplied by the foundation! Clearly trying to deceive the public again! See Picture in comment below!

So while the price maybe the same which states 12 Million Dollars (The amount the foundation claims is 7.9 Million) The City of Durango, CO Does not have Bonds out until 2034 Like Aberdeen does!

Keep in mind the population served by Durango's Library is 51,600! Also Found on the page!

Also CO Has a State Income Tax the gives more funds to cities, CO can afford this library. Aberdeen, SD CAN'T!
