Since 2001, Lafaek has provided educational magazines and media in Tetum, supporting students, teachers, and communities across Timor-Leste.

In 2001, CARE published a ground-breaking children’s magazine, the first publication with a truly natio

nal reach in the Tetum language, a language that unifies the linguistically diverse Timorese population, supporting a sense of national identity and culture, critical in nation-building, immediately after winning independence. More than 20 years after its inception, Lafaek continues to make significant and relevant contributions to Timor-Leste’s development as a vibrant and creative force promoting learning and communication under a Timorese team of managers, writers, artists, layout specialists, drivers, and field officers. To date, donor funding has supported Lafaek’s operations, but with current trends in reducing official development assistance for Timor-Leste, this is unlikely to be a reliable option for the future. To strengthen the long-term sustainability of Lafaek, CARE aims to transition this flagship project into a social enterprise.

🌱 Every child deserves the chance to grow, learn, and thrive.

Through our Atensaun Proteina program, CARE in Timor-Leste is working to combat malnutrition among vulnerable children in Oecusse and Ermera (Atsabe) — ensuring that students receive the protein supplements they need to stay healthy, focused, and in school.

But it doesn't stop there. We also work alongside teachers, community health volunteers, parents, and local authorities to promote better hygiene, nutrition practices, and long-term sustainable solutions at the school and community level.

This week, our Jornalista Lafaek Fila-liman team had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Jorge Manuel de Araújo Serrano, the President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Timor-Leste (CCI-TL), at his office in Acait, Dili. We are incredibly grateful for his valuable time and for sharing his inspiring journey from being an orphan of war to leading the nation's private sector!

Mr. Serrano shared that business is his ultimate passion, but emphasized that being a good entrepreneur isn't just about money—it requires strict management of finance and resources. He highlighted his strong advocacy for young startups, proposing a tax-free grace period so youth can focus on passion and experience first. He also praised women entrepreneurs for their excellent management skills, sharing his dream to see more women rise as major business leaders in Timor-Leste.

"Good entrepreneurs innovate and provide solutions; they don't just copy others. If people from other countries can succeed in our land, why can't we, the owners of the land, succeed!"

The Minister highly praised Revista Lafaek for keeping the culture of reading alive, sharing this powerful message: "I encourage women in every village, suku, and municipality to involve themselves in the planning of government programs. And to our friends with disabilities, you also have the right to participate in our nation's development."

Last week, our Lafaek Activist Journalists had the honor of meeting with His Excellency the Secretary of State for Civil Protection, Mr. Domingos Mariano Reis, at the CARE office in Dili. Accompanied by our partners from the Lenuk-Tasi Conservation Centre, we had an inspiring discussion about leadership, youth activism, and the critical importance of disaster mitigation and climate action in Timor-Leste.

From this event His Excellency also shares: As good citizens, we have a moral duty to contribute to the development of our nation. If we plant trees, we contribute to our nation and reduce the risk of disasters."

A huge thank you to His Excellency for welcoming us, sharing his valuable wisdom, and praising the humanitarian efforts of our youth!
