🌱 We were delighted to welcome the Dutch Ambassador to Timor-Leste, Marc Gerritsen, on his visit to Ermera and Aileu, alongside WFP Country Director Jacqueline de Groot.

The visit showcased WFP-supported initiatives, including the Bolsa da Mãe Kondisional SANUTRIO programme, which supports pregnant and breastfeeding women with nutritious food and cash transfers to help tackle malnutrition and stunting, and the Merenda Eskolar school meal programme, which connects local farmers with schools through home-grown school feeding.

These initiatives contribute to better nutrition, healthier children and stronger local food systems in Timor-Leste.

WFP was proud to join the Government of Timor-Leste in celebrating World Food Day 2026 in Dili, reaffirming our shared commitment to ensuring everyone has access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food.

Led by the Office of the Vice Prime Minister responsible for social affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, the national celebration brought together government ministries and institutions, United Nations agencies — including the Resident Coordinator’s Office, FAO, WHO and UNICEF — and development partners.

🤝 Together, we raised awareness and advocated for greater investment in innovative, sustainable solutions to strengthen food security, improve nutrition and build resilient food systems for all.

The celebration also featured an exhibition at the Conselho dos Combatentes da Libertação Nacional (CCLN), where participating institutions and partners showcased innovative initiatives and practical solutions to address food security and nutrition challenges in Timor-Leste.

On the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, we recognize that preparedness is one of the most effective ways to reduce the impact of disasters.

When emergencies occur, the speed and effectiveness of the response depend on having clear systems, defined responsibilities, trained personnel, reliable logistics, and coordinated institutions already in place.

Together with the Government of Timor-Leste, WFP is supporting efforts to strengthen national emergency preparedness and response capacity through improved logistics, supply chain readiness, contingency planning, emergency response training, and the prepositioning of critical relief items. These investments help ensure that assistance reaches people quickly when disasters strike.

Since 1999, WFP has stood alongside Timor-Leste, supporting communities and institutions to strengthen resilience and reduce vulnerability to future shocks.

Because disaster risk reduction is not only about responding better. It is about being prepared before the emergency begins.

As Timor-Leste prepares for the launch of the KOICA-funded Home-Grown School Feeding Project this November, the Government and WFP are already working together to build the partnerships needed to make it a success.

This week, representatives from key ministries and partners came together to discuss how schools, farmers, and communities can work hand in hand to improve children's nutrition while creating stronger market opportunities for local producers.

The discussions explored ways to support farmers, promote nutritious fortified rice, and strengthen school systems so that every child can benefit from healthy school meals.

This is another step towards a future where school feeding not only helps children learn and thrive, but also supports local agriculture and rural livelihoods.

The initiative will be implemented in Baucau, Bobonaro, Manufahi and Viqueque municipalities.
