The World Food Programme extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of H.E. Dr. Francisco Guterres Lรบ-Olo, former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, who passed away on 21 June 2026. Mr. Guterres Lรบ-Olo was a dedicated Timorese leader and a steadfast partner of the United Nations. Throughout his years of service, he showed a deep commitment to improving the lives of the Timorese people, especially the most vulnerable. He was a strong advocate for food and nutrition security, poverty reduction, and sustainable development, and at the 2021 UN Food Systems Summit he called for unity and collective action to build a better future for all.

We also express our sympathies to the people and Government of Timor-Leste during this time of mourning.

May his legacy of service, leadership, and dedication to the well-being of his people be remembered for generations to come.

On the road to the launch of the SANUTRIO Programme, WFP, together with the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion (MSSI), Ministry of Health (MoH), the National Department of Nutrition, and local health teams, recently completed a joint logistics and storage assessment across Community Health Centres (CHCs) in Covalima, Ermera, and Oecusse.

The review looked at road access, storage conditions, and offloading facilities to ensure CHCs and warehouses are ready to safely manage nutritious food commodities such as rice, supplements, and fortified blended foods. Led jointly by government technical staff and WFP teams, this initiative supports national efforts to improve nutrition service delivery, strengthen logistics, and ensure food assistance reaches communities safely and on time.

Beyond upcoming nutrition distributions under the Bolsa da Mรฃe Kondisionรกl Saude Inan no Oan (SANUTRIO) programme, the assessment also provides valuable municipalโ€‘level insights on road conditions and logistics capacity, helping guide future interventions, including preโ€‘positioning emergency supplies in hardโ€‘toโ€‘reach areas.

On June 12th, the Government of Japan and WFP delivered rice to the Government of Timor-Leste to support the national school feeding programme, helping ensure that more than 100,000 schoolchildren across the country have access to nutritious meals at school.

Funded through Japanโ€™s contribution of USD 700,000, the rice will support over 350 schools in Covalima, Aileu, Lautรฉm, and Dili, giving children the energy they need to learn, play, and thrive.

With the support of the People of the Republic of Korea, in partnership with the Government of Timor-Leste, and implemented by the World Food Programme (WFP), the KOICA funded โ€œSay No to 5Sโ€ initiative is helping turn that hope into reality in Baucau. Schools are not only providing healthier meals, but also creating safer, more dignified spaces where children can learn and thrive.

This week, H.E. Mr. CHANG Ha Yeon, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Timor-Leste, visited local schools to witness these changes firsthand. At EBC 1,2,3 Vilanova, the impact was visible, in the smiles of students receiving hot meals, in the care taken in newly improved kitchens, and in the renewed sense of possibility filling the classrooms.

Because when a child is no longer hungry, everything changes. They can concentrate. They can participate. They can dream.

This initiative is not just about food, it is about restoring opportunity, one meal at a time, and giving every child the chance to build a brighter future.

And this is only the beginning. With a second phase on the way, even more children will soon benefit, bringing us one step closer to a Timor-Leste where no child has to learn on an empty stomach.

A new of Lipid-Based Nutrient Supplements (LNS) has arrived in Timor-Leste, bringing vital nutritional support to the women and children who need it most. ๐Ÿคฑ๐Ÿ’›

Through the Bolsa da Mรฃe Kondisional ba Saรบde Nutrisaun Inan no Oan (SANUTRIO) programme, pregnant and breastfeeding women across the country will benefit from these nutrient-rich supplements, helping support healthier pregnancies, safer motherhood, and the healthy growth and development of young children.

Todayโ€™s arrival at the Dili National Warehouse marks another important step in the Government of Timor-Lesteโ€™s commitment to improving maternal and child nutrition.

WFP is proud to work alongside the Government, through the Ministry of Social Solidarity and Inclusion, and our partner the Asian Development Bank, to ensure this support reaches families who need it most.
