Youth Off The Streets Overseas Timor-Leste seeks to empower young people through early intervention

Mission:
We, Youth Off The Streets Overseas Relief Fund Timor-Leste, want to walk closely with children and young people in need and provide a safe space where we offer holistic inclusive assistance. Our aim is to help them find belonging in their community and build a positive future. Our services:
- Outreach weekly in Bedois, Maloa & Bebonuk, using sport, arts and learning to connect with young people in their own communities.
- Women's drop in, weekly at our centre in Marconi, offering life skills and meaningful engagement to young women
- Streetwalk & hotspot three times weekly across Dili, maintaining close contact in the community enabling connections for young people in need to various forms of support.
- Client care, providing individualised casework support to give young people a choice in their future
- English class, an entry level, informal English class to give young people some basic English language skills and open up new pathways for work and study.
- Literacy tutoring, a new initiative offering one on one tutoring as needed to enable entry back into education

This week, we Youth Off The Streets Overseas Relief Fund - Timor-Leste celebrated a meaningful milestone.

We are inspired by how girls were enthuastic about getting english exame done and at same time we celebrated farewel for our kind young volunteer, Joshua. Joshua was one of our volunteer helping girls and young women with english. He is now preparing himself prior to his departure to Australia for further education.

We are deeply inspired by progress, effort and determination of young ones and children under our care and that will continue inspiring work we are doing.

Yesterday, Bya and Mrs.Christine Gruhn from Youth Off The Streets Overseas Relief Fund - Timor-Leste felt honored to participate in of in Timor Leste.

AVI/AVP have been our amazing partner organization supporting us in providing human resources within international context that bring to develop our service in national context level. Our collaboration has crossed many sectoral development, mostly in human development.

Youth Workers and Volunteers were super excited to participate in the Youth Work Communication Training facilitated by Mrs.Gruhn from California, United State of America.

So far Youth Off The Streets Overseas Relief Fund - Timor-Leste have been so lucky to have Mrs.Gruhn with us and teaching us how public speaking, conversational english and teaching method very important to support our work.

The meeting was held at Youth Centre, YOTS ORF in Marconi and during the visit, we were proud of positive opportunities discussed and identified by both parties during the meeting.

Last week, 3rd October 2026, Our dedicated youth workers and youth work volunteers from Youth Off The Streets ORF Timor - Leste conducted Holistic Youth Service Activity in one of rural communities in the village of Vatuboro - Loes, municipality of Liquica.

This session aimed at bringing opportunity more closely to the communities, ensure there is safer space for children and young people to have access to information, learning and improving literacy skills as well as promoting inclusivity education where girls and young women feel more engaged and respected, people living with disability feel their presence.

So far, Streets_ORF_in_Timor - Leste have been regularly present in the rural communities across Ermera, Liquica and Dili with support from Gabinete de Apoio à Sociedade Civil - GASC IX Governo

We are grateful for the Gabinete de Apoio à Sociedade Civil - GASC IX Governo for their trust, partner organizations and community for the meaningful collaboration. Moreover, we extend our pride for the team who have always been committed and passionate in delivering services to the hard to reach kids and youth.

Last week, Saturday, September 16, 2026, the team of youth and children from Youth Off The Streets ORF Timor-Leste continued to organize another community event in Lauala suco, Ermera post of Ermera municipality. The objective of this activity is to engage children and youth closer to the opportunity to access education, health, and information about other social services.

During the activity, the team organized sports events, distribution of referral resources, information on health and education including employment-related opportunities for youth in the community. Before starting the activity, the team had a good opportunity to interview the suco leadership and hear his experience about the community's feelings and thoughts during the presence of Youth Off The Streets ORF Timor-Leste in their reading this year. Sharing experiences with us, this inspires hope and opportunity for future collaboration for holistic child and youth empowerment services in Timor-Leste that can contribute to the growth of economic, social and political development at the national and municipal levels.

This activity was successfully implemented because of the support and collaboration between Youth Off The Streets ORF Timor-Leste and the Civil Society Support Office – IX Constitutional Government of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste.

𝐀 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐞𝐫 𝐉𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐲 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐧𝐬: 𝐒𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐚

Having grown up in the United Kingdom, Sofia found Youth Off The Streets ORF Timor-Leste to be a meaningful organisation where she could contribute to the lives of children and young people through volunteering.

Yesterday, Sofia and her friend, Josua, began their volunteer placement at the Youth Centre in Marconi. Their involvement followed their expression of interest and discussions with the Programme Manager, Mr Cipriano, about how they could best contribute to the organisation’s work.

Sofia shared her vision of a world where everyone has equal opportunities and access to education, healthcare, and social welfare services within their communities. After learning about Youth Off The Streets ORF Timor-Leste from one of her school friends in Dili, Sofia realised that volunteering with the organisation would be a meaningful way to support others. She then met with Mr Cipriano to discuss the available opportunities.

As youth workers, we find Sofia’s decision truly inspiring. Her commitment brings fresh energy to the work we are doing in Timor-Leste. We are delighted to welcome Sofia and Josua, and we look forward to sharing this meaningful journey with them.
