What was once thriving land is now beneath the sea

This documentary exposes the devastating reality facing coastal communities in Freetown as rising sea levels and coastal erosion continue to consume land, homes, businesses, and livelihoods. Since 2017, communities including Sugarland, Bololo, Bango Farm, Ogoo Farm, and Lakka have witnessed unprecedented environmental destruction.

According to community accounts documented in this investigation, more than 4 miles of coastal land have been lost to the Atlantic Ocean within the last seven years. Over 300 houses, businesses, and community assets have disappeared beneath advancing waters, while valuable infrastructure, including a heliport, hotels, and public facilities, has been severely affected.

Families who once lived and farmed in these communities have been forced to relocate as the sea continues to claim more land each year. What was once a vibrant coastline is rapidly becoming a symbol of the climate crisis confronting Sierra Leone. Climate change is no longer a future threat. It is happening now. Coastal erosion and sea level rise are reshaping communities, increasing poverty, threatening food security, and putting thousands of lives at risk.

This documentary serves as a call for urgent action to protect vulnerable communities, strengthen coastal resilience, restore degraded ecosystems, and support climate adaptation efforts across Sierra Leone. The impacts of sea level rise and coastal erosion along the Sugarland-to-Lakka coastline have been highlighted by shout Climate Change Africa (SCCA), working to raise awareness and promote action.

Produced by Shout Climate Change Africa (SCCA), the Publisher of The Nature Newspaper an environmental advocacy organization founded 2014 in Sierra Leone, to raise awareness and mobilize action on climate change and environmental challenges. The sea is rising. The time to act is now.
